BREEDING
NSW Breeding Schemes - Where Champions Are Made
Breeding Scheme Summary
The NSW Breeders Challenge is comprised of the Alabar Breeders Challenge race series, Empire Stallions Regional Finals, Breeders Challenge Owners Bonus Scheme and Breeders Challenge Nominators Bonus Scheme.
The progeny of either NSW based stallions or mares are eligible to compete in the NSW Breeders Challenge. Provided a foal is at least 50% NSW bred, that is, either its sire is based in NSW during the season of service or the mare is served and foals in NSW, it may be made eligible for the NSW Breeders Challenge through registration in NSW, or separate nomination if registered elsewhere.
A compulsory payment of $275 applies to all foals registered in NSW. This fee includes foal registration, freeze branding and foal DNA testing as well as NSW Breeders Challenge eligibility should a foal be at least 50% NSW bred. A foal that is at least 50% NSW bred and registered elsewhere may also be made eligible for NSW Breeding Schemes on the payment of a $275 nomination fee.
Annual participation fees for 2YO and 3YO horses of $275 will be invoiced on September 1 before the applicable racing season. These fees enable the participation in the Alabar Breeders Challenge race series and Breeders Challenge Regional Finals while also entitling the owners of eligible horses to Breeders Challenge Owners Bonus certificates. See table below for expected invoicing dates.

Alabar Breeders Challenge Race Series
The aim of the Alabar Breeders Challenge Race Series is to promote improvement in the quality of the Standardbred breed in NSW, provide an incentive to domicile more mares in NSW and to reward NSW breeders through the development of a lucrative race series and bonus scheme in their home state.
Heats of $15,000 are conducted at racetracks throughout NSW, with $25,000 semi-finals and $125,000 finals held at TABCorp Park Menangle on the last Sunday in June each year.
From Series 4 onwards (2011/12 eligible 3YOs), 5% of prizemoney for all Breeders Challenge races will be paid to the nominator of the 3YO and the stallion nominator of all runners.

Breeders Challenge Owners Bonus Scheme
As of July 1 2010, the State Bred Bonus Scheme became known as the Breeders Challenge Owners Bonus Scheme. Certificates are applied to all NSW “C” class races (with the exception of Breeders Challenge, Group, Listed, Futurity races and any other races determined from time to time by HRNSW). The owners of Breeders Challenge eligible 2 and 3YO’s each win a $2,500 bonus certificate for a horse’s first NSW “C” Class win for the season. Breeders Challenge eligible 4YO’s will also win a $2,500 Bonus Certificate for their first NSW “C” Class win provided they have not won a bonus certificate as a 2 or 3YO.
Breeders Challenge Owners Bonus certificates are redeemable against the purchase price of a Breeders Challenge eligible yearling, or against the service fees of stallions nominated for the NSW Breeding Schemes. The Board has increased the budget for these certificates by $100,000 to $700,000 and the new conditions will ensure that a greater number of participants share in the scheme and ultimately reinvest in the breeding industry.
Breeders Challenge Regional Finals
Both Wagga and Parkes HRCs have conducted successful Breeders Challenge Regional Finals in 2010 and 2011 respectively. The meeting in Parkes was sponsored for the first time by the prominent Victorian stud Empire Stallions.
The Breeders Challenge Regional Finals feature six $20,000 finals for Breeders Challenge eligible 2YOs, 3YOs and 4YOs of both sexes, as well as three consolations, and rotate between country venues each year.
For results, please see the Breeders Challenge Honour Roll below.
Breeders Challenge Nominators Bonus
As part of the HRNSW Board’s commitment to allocate 25% of Race Fields Legislation earnings to breeding initiatives, it is the intention to provide a Breeders Challenge Nominators Bonus to breeders of foals conceived in the 2010-11 season. The nominators of Breeders Challenge eligible 2 and 3YO’s will win a $3,000 cash bonus for a horse’s first “C” Class win for the season. Breeders Challenge eligible 4YO’s will also win a $3,000 cash bonus for their first “C” Class win provided they have not won a cash bonus as a 2 or 3YO.
Potentially, the Breeders Challenge Owners and Nominators Bonuses will raise the value of an eligible horse’s first NSW “C” class win of a season to over $10,000.
In addition, should a Breeders Challenge eligible 2, 3 or 4YO win a Group 1 race in Australia, the nominator of the horse shall receive 10% of the race's total prizemoney.
Breeders Challenge Trotters Race Series
Harness Racing NSW is pleased to confirm that there will be a Trotters Race Series added to the NSW Breeders Challenge for foals born this season (2011/12 breeding season). These foals will fall into Series 7 in line with the pacers. Eligibility criteria along with nomination and sustaining fees will be the same as those already in place. Trotters that are paid up for the Breeders Challenge are already eligible for an Owner's Bonus Certificate upon their first "c" or "m" penalty race win in NSW. The Trotters Race Series has been introduced to create more opportunity for owners and breeders of square gaiters to earn more prizemoney while encouraging more participants to breed trotters in NSW.
The series will comprise of semi finals into finals, provided there are sufficient nominations for each event. The first series is set to run in 2013/14, when the trotters born this season become 2YOs.
Stallion Nominations
In order to participate in the NSW Breeding Schemes, a non-NSW based stallion must be nominated by a stud which agrees to pay the same foal fees applicable to a NSW based stallion. The fees for both NSW and non-NSW based stallions are charged on a live-foal basis for all Alabar Breeders Challenge eligible foals registered in NSW, or registered elsewhere but nominated for the NSW Breeding Schemes.
Nomination for the NSW Breeding Schemes allows non-NSW based stallions to have SBBS certificates and BCOB certificates used against their service fees. Foal eligibility for the NSW Breeding Schemes is not determined by interstate or international stallion nominations, as a foal by any stallion may be eligible for inclusion should they be out of a NSW based mare.
NSW Stallion nominations
From the coming breeding season onwards (2011/12), studmasters in NSW, like interstate studmasters, will have the option of nominating their stallions for the NSW Breeding Schemes. As foal fees for NSW based stallions will no longer be compulsory, BCOB and SBBS certificates will only be redeemable against the service fees of stallions, both NSW and interstate based, that are nominated for the NSW Breeding Schemes in the season of service.
This change does NOT affect the Breeders Challenge eligibility of resulting foals as foals sired by any NSW based stallion or out of a NSW based mare will still be considered at least 50% NSW bred.
A list of NSW and interstate based stallions nominated for the NSW Breeding Schemes in 2011-12 will be published in the HRNSW Gazette, the National Trotguide and below, prior to the start of the season and will be updated regularly.

Stallion fees for foals born and registered in the 2011/12 season are set at $110 (GST inclusive) will be invoiced September 1 in the season after foaling.
The nominators of NSW Breeding Scheme eligible stallions also receive 5% of Alabar Breeders Challenge heat and final prizemoney won by the progeny of the nominated sire from series 4 onwards. Stallion nominator payments will apply for the Alabar Breeders Challenge series for which stallion fees were charged.
