HE has worked with many Group 1 winning trainers and it appears to have paid off for Bathurst trainer Aaron Williams.

The horseman has his first Group 1 starter in tonight’s $100 000 Tooheys New Gold Crown Final at Gold Crown Paceway, Bathurst.

His two-year-old colt Pat McGarry won his heat comfortably last Saturday night, securing a position in the lucrative final in barrier six.

“The draw isn’t ideal but hopefully we can settle down close enough at the start,” Williams said.

“I couldn’t be happier with how he pulled up after his run Saturday and with the right run in the final he’ll be there at the finish.”

Named after a good friend of Williams, Pat McGarry already has a following of his own with a number of people in the crowd cheering him home in his heat.

“He’s definitely got a lot of character, he’s a bit of a larrikin like my mate and the name sounded cool,” Williams said.

“It was such a great feeling having my friends and family all there cheering him on, they were all pumped up so it made the experience pretty exciting.”
