Stewards tonight (Young 21st March) questioned Driver N Hurst regarding the tactics adopted and performance of FLORIST in the above race. Mr Hurst stated that prior to the race the Trainer had stated he was keen to lead as the mare had won its previous start run in quick time when able to lead and they were confident of a forward showing. He added that FLORIST showed gate speed and was able to lead entering the first urn and despite being somewhat pressured for the lead rounding the first turn by ZARAS CHOICE, he was reluctant to surrender that position given the Trainer’s wishes, he also added that although the lead time was quick he felt the mare was doing it without being overly pressured. He added that at this stage of the race he was still confident the mare would be able to finish the race off if they were able to get an easy sectional at some stage in the race, however this did not eventuate due to the other runners improving to his outside during the run. Mr Hurst further added that when PUMP THE BRAKES improved to his outside near the 1200 metres despite it racing up on the outside of FLORIST he didn’t feel it placed enough pressure on his runner to surrender the lead given the stage of the race. He added that he wasn’t too disappointed with the way FLORIST finished the race off given the circumstances.
