RACE 1 –  ARISTOCRAT TECHNOLOGIES PACE – 2125 metres

Pre race blood samples were taken from JOEY TEE

THEARTOFINFUSION which raced in the position outside of the leader tired significantly over the final 800 metres. When questioned, trainer/driver M Muscat explained that despite the fact that he raced without cover he expected THEARTOFNFUSION to finish the race off well. He added that the gelding had worked well leading in the event and he was disappointed with the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. M Muscat was advised that THEARTOFINFUSION would be stood down from racing until it can complete one official trial prior to resuming for what was deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance.

OUR SOHOE was unable to secure clear running until passing the 200 metres.

JOEY TEE broke its near side lug pole during the event.

Post-race swab samples were taken from EVERYTHINGHAPPENS

RACE 2 – LION NATHAN PACE – 2125 metres

Pre race blood samples were taken from LIP READER

IN MASSACHUSETTS NZ underwent a veterinary examination pre and post-race as per HRNSW policy. Upon undergoing the post-race veterinary examination it was determined that IN MASSACHUSETTS NZ was lame in its near fore leg. Adopting the veterinary advice IN MASSACHUSETTS NZ was stood down from racing pending a veterinary certificate of fitness.

Approaching the 1900 metres, JUGIONG became unbalanced and galloped resulting in GUNNAREIGN being inconvenienced which in turned caused HES PERFECTLY IDEAL NZ to be checked and that runner galloped. A warning was placed on JUGIONG.

WE SALUTE YOU was inclined to hang out racing over the final 800 metres.

FANNING which led the event tired significantly over the final 500 metres. Driver M Towers explained that the colt was inclined to overrace and never had an opportunity to settle in the lead due to the numerous mid race moves. This, combined with the quality of tonight’s field and distance of the event were, in his opinion, contributing factors in the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. Connections were advised that FANNING, who had won its last two races, would be stood down from racing until it can complete one official trial for what was deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance.

Post-race swab samples were taken from GUNNAREIGN

RACE 3 – SUNBLEST CLEANING PACE – 1720 metres

Pre-race blood samples were taken from SOULWRITER

The explanation tendered by trainer K Turner regarding the late declaration of R Morris as the driver of PROPHESY was accepted.

BARA JAYLA was unable to secure clear running in the home straight and was not fully tested.

SOULWRITER was unable to secure clear running in the home straight and was not fully tested.

W Rixon was questioned regarding the tactics employed on SOUTHBOUND TRAIN NZ. W Rixon explained that he was not afforded any firm instructions from trainer J Rando and was able to drive with initiative. He stated that SOUTHBOUND TRAIN NZ was well graded in the event and, with this in mind, he wanted to ensure he put the gelding into the event. Therefore, he followed LANIKAI BEACH early and then when the tempo steadied, he improved three wide leaving the 1200 metres. W Rixon added that racing between the 1100 and 1000 metres SOUTHBOUND TRAIN NZ raced roughly and due to this he was unable to commence a challenge for the position outside of leader until leaving the 900 metres. Despite the fact he did not challenge until relatively late in the event, he was surprised that MAJOR CHILI withstood his challenge due to the work that runner had undertaken in the early stages. W Rixon explained that SOUTHBOUND TRAIN NZ can work in its races, however tonight the gelding was unbalanced when negotiating the turns. As evidenced by the fact that leaving the 300 metres the gelding galloped when he had to make a slight movement away from SOULWRITER which shifted out marginally. W Rixon’s explanation was noted. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. In view of the gelding’s recent record SOUTHBOUND TRAIN NZ was stood down from racing until it can complete one official trial.

Post-race swab samples were taken from MAJOR CHILI

RACE 4 – ASAHI PACE – 2125 metres

Pre-race blood samples were taken from SIMPLY CLEVER NZ

The explanation tendered by trainer K Turner regarding the late declaration of R Morris as the driver of BETTOR TO BE TRICKY NZ was accepted.

Driver B Graham was questioned regarding the tactics employed on VASARI NZ in particular, the tempo set when leading. B Graham explained that it was her first drive on the gelding and she was instructed to lead and was advised that VASARI NZ needs to stay racing on the bit. B Graham added that VASARI NZ began well and had to withstand a challenge from CHRISTIAN MAJOR which caused VASARI NZ to overrace. Then, racing toward the 1400 metres, after settling the gelding, several runners improved in the middle stages which caused VASARI NZ to once again overrace and he was then unable to be settled. B Graham stated that the gelding continue do respond to her driving over the concluding stages and only weakened over the final 200 metres. B Graham’s explanation was noted.

When questioned regarding the performance of RAFFAELLO driver C Hart explained that  he elected to improve three wide as he believed CHRISTIAN MAJOR had done too much early work and he wanted to obtain cover off PASS THE SPEIGHTS which had just commenced its run three wide. He added that the tempo remained solid throughout which was unsuitable and RAFFAELLO NZ was under pressure from the 600 metres. C Hart’s explanation was noted. Connections were advised that RAFFAELLO NZ would be stood down from racing until it can complete one official trial for what was deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance.

Post-race swab samples were taken from BETTOR TO BE TRICKY NZ

REPARTEE NZ galloped out. A warning was issued.

The all clear was delayed to afford Stewards an opportunity to review the circumstances surrounding fourth placed SEMI SENSATION racing inside marker pegs from the 200 metres to the 50 metres. It was established that leaving the 200 metres, SEMI SENSATION shifted in when driver P Lindon attempted to remove the deafeners. SEMI SENSATION then continued to race well inside the line of the marker pegs while driver P Lindon drove him out with a level of vigour and did not restrain his runner in an attempt to return the gelding to the course outside of the line of the marker pegs. Therefore, acting under rule 66 (e) SEMI SENSATION was disqualified from the event. The all clear was then given on the numbers of 2-9-4-8. At a subsequent inquiry Driver P Lindon pleaded guilty to charges under Rule 163(c)(i) and 163(2) in that leaving the 200 metres, he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent SEMI SENSATION from shifting inside of the marker pegs and then after racing a significant distance inside of the marker pegs he failed to restrain SEMI SENSATION to return the gelding to the course proper. In assessing the matter of penalty consideration was given to P Lindon’s driving record, guilty plea, obvious remorse and the consequences of his actions. P Lindon had his license to drive was suspended for a period of 28 days.

Furthermore, near the finish, DUKKAH was checked and galloped due to LOUISIANA FREEDOM which proved difficult to drive, hanging in and placing DUKKAH in restricted room. Given LOUISIANA FREEDOM and DUKKAH were both unplaced and the incident was found to not affect their placings, the all clear was given on the judges numbers of 1-5-4-9. Subsequently, I GOTTA GO BYE will now be excluded from the mobile barrier draw. A warning was placed on LOUISIANA FEEDOM.

He added that approaching the 600 metres the gelding was off the bit and required vigorous driving. He added that he was surprised was a short priced favourite. L McCarthy’s explanation was noted.
