MAHALA PRINCE – Pre-race blood sample.  Improved three wide from the 1350 metres to race wide for the remainder of the event.  Stewards questioned driver N Xuereb in relation to his tactics during the event and his decision to improve three wide from the 1350 metres.  Mr Xuereb explained that approaching this point, MONTENERO which was racing outside the leader was racing some distance back from the leading group and as a result looked to improve as he was of the opinion that that MONTENERO wanted cover.  Mr Xuereb explained that when improving three wide, MAHALA PRINCE was unable to muster the required speed to cross forward of MONTENERO and as a result was left racing three wide for the remainder of the event.  Mr Xuereb explained that considering the second quarter being 29.7 and the third quarter being 30.6 Mr Xuereb was quite disappointed that MAHALA PRINCE was not able to muster the required speed to cross that runner.  Stewards noted Mr Xuereb’s comments.
