PETES SAID SO NZ – Entering the first turn, shifted in and tightened the running of MARTY MAJOR which in turn shifted in and tightened WE SALUTE YOU.  Driver R Morris was advised to exercise greater care and was reminded of his obligations with regards to the appropriate clearance when crossing.

REGAL ROCK NZ – (barrier 8) Broke gait during the score up.  A warning was issued.  Improved three wide near the 750 metres to trail WHEREYABINBOPPIN and was left to race without cover from the 600 metres. Paced roughly rounding the final turn. On the entry to the home straight, inconvenienced when crowded to the inside of ISLAND BANNER which hung in. Trainer/driver G Bull was questioned as to his tactics, in particular, his decision to improve three wide from the 750 metres.  Mr Bull stated that during the event his gelding was travelling well and was pulling at the time and as WHEREYABINBOPPIN had pulled out to improve, he felt that runner would remain three wide for a longer distance and provide him cover. Mr Bull stated that when left exposed from the 600 metres, his gelding paced roughly rounding the final turn and lost ground but overall considering the run he was happy with the gelding’s efforts.  Stewards noted his explanation however, Mr Bull was advised that in all of the circumstances, he had erred in his judgement in that it was reasonable to expect WHEREYABINBOPPIN to improve to the position outside the leader which would leave REGAL ROCK NZ exposed without cover. Having considered the tactics, Stewards did not believe the tactics where that unreasonable and culpable to the degree that would warrant any further action to be taken.

ISLAND BANNER – Improved three wide with a trail from the 700 metres.  Hung in on the entry to the home straight which crowded REGAL ROCK NZ.

SI SI SENOR NZ – Pre-race blood sample.  Improved three wide from the 1000 metres and was left to race without cover from the 600 metres. Trainer/driver M Formosa was questioned as to his tactics, in particular, his decision to improve three wide from the 1000 metres. Mr Formosa stated that he elected to drive the horse less aggressively at the start as he did not wish to push forward and be unable to find a position without cover considering two starts prior at Menangle on 13 June 2020, he was left to race without cover after working forward and the gelding failed to run on and perform to expectation. Mr Formosa stated that when settling at the back of the field, he had elected to improve as he felt MAJOR ROLL which had been in the running line and forward of his drive would improve forward of him and provide cover for SI SI SENOR NZ. Mr Formosa stated that as MAJOR ROLL improved forward as expected, it then pushed forward quickly to the position outside the leader which had left his horse to race without cover for longer than he would have liked. Stewards noted his comments however, Mr Formosa was advised that in all of the circumstances, he had erred in his judgement as it was reasonable to expect MAJOR ROLL would improve to the position outside the leader which would leave SI SI SENOR NZ exposed without cover. Having considered the tactics, Stewards did not believe the tactics where that unreasonable and culpable to the degree that would warrant any further action to be taken.

IM FEELING FIREY – Caught wide in the early stages until obtaining a position in the running line and with cover at the 1200 metres.  At the 300 metres shifted out and contacted the sulky of THE DEMOCRAT. At a subsequent inquiry, Stewards accepted that THE DEMOCRAT had been weakening and therefore had contributed to the incident in addition to noting IM FEELING FIREY was hanging in despite the efforts of its driver T McCarthy to shift wider and obtain clear running to its outside.  In all of the circumstances, Stewards reported the incident however advised driver T McCarthy to exercise greater care.

CROOKWELL JAKE – Held up for clear running until approaching the 100 metres.  Shifted out and had taken MAJADORE NZ into the line of THE DEMOCRAT resulting that runner being inconvenienced.  Driver W Rixon was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground.

RACE 7 – SUCCESS STUD SPELLING SERVICES PACE – 1609 metres

BROCKS TERRITORY – Driver R Morris explained that he utilised the good draw but was required to work harder than anticipated to maintain the lead as he did not wish to allow RAYS CHOICE to cross as this would likely take his runner back three positions when VANDANTA NZ would be expected to improve to the lead. Mr Morris added that as a result of the early use, his gelding failed to settle in the run.

RAYS CHOICE – Pre-race blood sample.  Near the 150 metres, tightened before being checked and paced roughly as a result of being taken up by FORTYEIGHTHENSON which in turn was taken up by NO APACHEMEE NZ.

UNCLE JAY – Presented on course prior to 10am on the morning of the race due to the gelding being subject to the elevated TCO2 listing.  Pre-race blood sample.

Mr Trainor had his licence suspended for a period of seven days which was ordered to commence at midnight on Saturday, 11 July 2020 and to expire on Sunday, 19 July 2020 on which day he may drive.  When considering penalty Stewards took into account Mr Trainor’s guilty plea, driving record and the individual circumstances of this incident.

ROCKNROLL ANGEL – Held up for clear running for the entire length of the home straight and was not fully tested.

NOSTRA VILLA – Trainer/driver B Hewitt was questioned as to his tactics in the event.  Mr Hewitt stated that from the wide barrier draw and noting that the mare was first up in his stable since 18 April 2020, he elected to drive the mare back at the start considering its form in Melbourne which he did not consider to be overly strong. Mr Hewitt stated that during the run, his mare felt to be travelling well however, rounding the final turn NOSTRA VILLA commenced to hang in and therefore elected to take the opportunity of improving to the inside of UNCLE JAY and looked to gain splits in the run. Mr Hewitt stated that when no opportunity for clear running was presented, his runner was held up over the later stages of the event. Stewards reported the comments of Mr Hewitt and advised him that they would expect the horse to be driven in a consistent manner if the same circumstances were present.

Mr Portelli explained that after settling behind the leader, his mare was travelling comfortably at which point BLAZING UNDER FIRE NZ commenced to improve in the running line near the 600 metres and his mare commenced to race keenly. Mr Portelli stated that knowing the mare and her history in over racing, he elected to move up the track and race in a half cart position to ensure he was not placed in a pocket and causing his mare to be disadvantaged when over racing. Mr Portelli added that he acknowledges the fact that it would have been most suitable to remain trailing GLENFERRIE TYPHOON NZ rounding the final turn however his decision was baced on his mare’s individual racing manners at this time.

BLAZING UNDER FIRE NZ – Approaching the 100 metres commenced to trot roughly before converting into a pace and galloping for the remainder of the event.  In view of the horse’s recent record, BLAZING UNDER FIRE NZ will now be stood down until it completes one requalifying trial.
