RACE 4 – CENTRAL WEST PLUMBING & GASFITTING PACE – 2260 metres

DAZZLE ME NZ – Stewards questioned driver Matt Rue with regards to the tactics he adopted in the event, in particular his decision to hand up the lead to BEETSON passing the 1900 metres and further his decision to shift wider on the track passing the 400 metres rather than wait for the opportunity of the sprint lane.  Mr Rue advised Stewards that he was provided instructions prior to the event by trainer Barry Lew that if challenged in the early stages by BEETSON, who is known as a tough front running gelding to consider handing up the lead.  Mr Rue in considering the tactics advised by trainer Barry Lew in addition to the concern that BEETSON would ensure a strong tempo over the longer 2260 metres determined it was his best option to hand up the lead at the 1900 metres when BEETSON challenged strongly. Further, Mr Rue advised that approaching the 400 metres he felt that BEETSON appeared under pressure at that stage of the event and was concerned that it may give ground prior to reaching the sprint lane and providing him the avenue to obtain the inside running.  Mr Rue therefore elected shift SMOOTH SAILOR wider on the track and looked to obtain running to the outside.  After considering the explanation provided by Mr Rue Stewards determined to note his comments.

SMOOTH SAILOR – Post-race swab sample.

BEETSON – Examined prior to and following the running of this event as the gelding is 12 years of age and has competed in excess of 200 race starts.  The examinations failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.  Pre-race blood sample.  Worked forward to the lead passing the 900 metres.

RACE 5 – LEXUS OF DUBBO PACE – 1730 metres

COURAGEOUS ATOM – Stewards questioned driver Shannon Rye with regards to the horse tiring over the concluding stages of the event to finish in ninth placing beaten 75 metres.  Mr Rye advised Stewards that he had been waiting on the horse to draw a decent barrier for some time as he felt the horse is better when able to lead.  Mr Rye therefore elected to take the opportunity to lead this evening but he felt the horse was very disappointing.  Mr Rye further advised that the horse is engaged at Dubbo this coming Sunday and would be driven with cover in that event as a result of tonight’s performance.  After considering the recent record of COURAGEOUS ATOM it was given its last chance to race truly.

PUNTERS DELIGHT – Driver Toby Inwood was cautioned in relation to his whip use over the concluding stages of the event in relation to both Rule 156(2) and 156(3).

HALL STAR – Pre-race blood sample.  Galloped out.  After considering the recent record of the mare it was placed outside the mobile barrier draw.

WILLIEWA LIGHTNING – Caught racing three wide in the early stages of the event before working forward to the position outside the leader passing the 1200 metres.  Post-race swab sample.  Stewards questioned driver Greg Rue with regards to the somewhat improved performance of the gelding this evening.  Mr Rue advised Stewards that the gelding at its most recent starts had been hanging and racing roughly and has a habit of cross firing terribly.  Mr Rue further advised that he has been making a number of adjustments to the shoeing of the gelding and he believes he may have finally found the solution and as a result was not surprised by the performance of the gelding this evening given its work at home on Monday was exceptional.  After considering the explanation provided by Mr Rue Stewards determined to note his comments.
