AORANGI NZ – Post-race swab samples were obtained.

CADENZA – Approaching the 500 metres had to be steadied away from STRONG DESIRE which shifted out slightly and subsequently CADENZA became unbalanced and broke gait.  Given the marginal shift from STRONG DESIRE no further action was taken.

SCENIC SKY – Approaching the 600 metres was obliged to be checked away from CROW POWER which broke gait.  Trainer D Binskin was fined the sum of $100 under Rule 273(6)(a) for presenting SCENIC SKY into the parade ring in the incorrect saddle cloth number.

CROW POWER – Out of position at the start and will continue to be excluded from the mobile barrier draw.  Approaching the 600 metres became unbalanced and broke gait.  Given its recent good record a warning was issued.

ONE NIGHT OUT NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Raced roughly after the start.  When questioned regarding the performance of ONE NIGHT OUT NZ driver L McCarthy explained that the gelding continued to get its head down during the event and this affected the gelding’s gait.  Trainer C Cross advised that he would look to make a gear change on ONE NIGHT OUT NZ and place a head check on the gelding to rectify this issue.

GALLEONS GLORY NZ – Post-race swab samples were obtained.

RIGHT MOVES – Became unbalanced and broke gait shortly after the start.  In view of its recent good record a warning was issued.

GOLD SOVEREIGN NZ – Slightly out of position at the start.

RACE 3 – APG SYDNEY SALES 7 MARCH PACE – 1609 metres

PLAY THE MUSIC – Tired significantly over the final 500 metres.  Driver R Morris was unable to offer any real explanation for the performance although he did indicate that it appears that PLAY THE MUSIC is not suited by the Menangle track at this stage of its career and it will be the intention of the stable to restrict PLAY THE MUSIC to racing at alternative venues.  Despite this explanation connections were advised that PLAY THE MUSIC would be stood down from racing until it can complete one satisfactory official trial.  Trainer’s representative R Morris was issued with a reprimand under Rule 43A (1) for taking PLAY THE MUSIC off the race track prior to the required 30 minutes lapsing.  In issuing the reprimand Stewards were mindful of the long standing good record of R Morris and the circumstances surrounding the removal of the horse and accepted that it was as a result of an inadvertent miscommunication between stable employees.

KENNY SAID – Held up and checked when caught behind the tiring PLAY THE MUSIC between the 600 metres and the 400 metres.

SURFER BOY – Became unbalanced and broke gait during the early stages of the score up and was out of position at the start.  Connections were advised that SURFER BOY would now be excluded from the mobile barrier draw.

RACE 5 – WARDS ACCOUNTING GROUP PACE – 1609 metres

PIRATE BAY NZ – Driver J Callaghan was questioned regarding the tactics employed on PIRATE BAY NZ of concern was his decision to remain racing behind the leader KATCHAR SHOOBEE throughout the event when an opportunity to shift out to race outside of the leader existed up until approaching the 900 metres.  J Callaghan explained that he was instructed by trainer J Trainor to attempt to lead on PIRATE BAY NZ however if he was unable to lead the event he was to drive the horse with initiative.  J Callaghan added that when he was easily crossed by KATCHAR SHOOBEE shortly after the start he remained racing behind that runner and was satisfied that PIRATE BAY NZ had settled well and although he briefly gave some consideration to leaving the marker pegs leaving the 1000 when WAHS FIRE BUG NZ improved to his outside he believed that KATCHAR SHOOBEE would give him a favourable trail into the event. He added that he was confident he would be able to navigate a clear run once into the home straight.  J Callaghan stated that leaving the 200 metres a run did appear between KATCHAR SHOOBEE and WAHS FIRE BUG NZ however PIRATE BAY NZ did not improve into the run as well expected given that the gelding was travelling well up to this point.  He added that he was quite disappointed that PIRATE BAY NZ did not improve into the run despite his urgings.  When questioned trainer J Trainor confirmed the instructions to his driver and added that at this stage PIRATE BAY NZ is still a work in progress and he has not yet established the best way for PIRATE BAY NZ to be driven but in his opinion PIRATE BAY NZ appears to race best when able to lead.  A post-race veterinary examination of PIRATE BAY NZ revealed no obvious abnormalities.  The explanations of J Callaghan and J Trainor were noted.

BOLTA – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.

WAHS FIRE BUG NZ – Caught wide in the early stages before working forward to the position outside of the leader.

DEANO ROBYN NZ – Underwent a pre and post-race veterinary examination as per HRNSW’s animal welfare policy.  No abnormalities were detected.

CROOKWELL JAKE – When questioned driver W Rixon explained that he incurred a gear malfunction on the gelding as he endeavoured to drive CROOKWELL JAKE out over the concluding stages.  He added that approaching the 100 metres the cracker on his whip got caught in the hopple shortener cord and he was not able to properly drive CROOKWELL JAKE out.
