RACE 1 – BARASTOC PACE – 2030 metres

AQUA CRUISER – Broke in the middle stages of the score up and was out of position at the start. A warning was issued. Over-raced during the middle stages of the event and tired from the 400 metres to be beaten 65 metres. When questioned regarding the performance, Driver L. Green stated that the gelding was contacting its own sulky wheel slightly and as a result the gelding wanted to over-race. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 2 – TAB VENUE MODE PACE – 2030 metres

JOHNSON STEP NZ – Post-race swab sample.

ISLAS JOY NZ – Trainer T. Butt was fined $50 under Rule 268A(1) for failing to have a gear form lodged. Over-raced throughout the event and tired from the 500 metres to be beaten 87 metres. When questioned regarding the performance, Driver R. Butt stated that the gelding commenced to over-race leaving the 1500 metres and as a result the gelding was uncontrollable due to over-racing despite his efforts. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. In view of the gelding’s racing manners it was stood down until it can complete one satisfactory trial.

SKY DIAMOND NZ – Caught wide early and worked forward to the position outside the lead near the 1800 metres.

OHOKA JIMMY – Pre-race blood sample.

RACE 3 – CLUB MENANGLE COUNTRY SERIES HEAT – 1609 metres

HIDDEN DELIGHT NZ – Near the 200 metres attempted to shift wider on the track between BREXXIT and WATCHFUL LADY and as a result was disappointed for that run and broke. In view of the mare’s record a warning was issued.

ROYAL ADMIRAL – Caught wide in the early stages before being restrained to the rear of the field near the 1100 metres.

COURAGEOUS DANCER – Post-race swab sample.

POPSTAROMAR – Pre-race blood sample.

A PARADIM SHIFT – Broke in the early stages of the score up. A warning was issued.

RACE 4 – GARRARDS HORSE & HOUND PACE – 2030 metres

BROOKLYNS BEST – Post-race swab sample.

DRAGON TATTOO NZ – Held up for clear running for the majority of the home straight.

MOHS EM DOWN NZ – Pre-race blood sample. Made a three wide move leaving the 1200 metres and obtained the position outside the lead near the 1000 metres.

NEVER KNOW CHARLIE – Caught wide in the early stages before working forward to the position outside he lead near the 1500 metres.

RACE 5 – SOMERSET MEATS PACE –  1609 metres

GROSESTAR – Driver G. Bull was advised that he must modify his whip action to comply with the rules.

BAILEY’S KNIGHT NZ – Checked and broke rounding the first turn when tightened for room by MAJOR CURRENCY. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have lacerations to its off hind leg.

MAJOR CURRENCY – Driver S. Grima pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference in that rounding the first turn he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his gelding shifting down the track and as a result BAILEY’S KNIGHT NZ was checked and broke. S. Grima’s licence to drive in races was suspended for a period of 21 days to commence and midnight 19th January 2021. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account S. Grima’s guilty plea, his driving record which showed that this was his first suspension under this rule and that the incident took place on the first turn. Post-race swab sample.

SHANNONSTHEMAN – Pre-race blood sample. Driver B. Elder was advised that he must modify his whip action to comply with the rules.

SOLE AMBITION NZ – Made a three wide near the 1000 metres before obtaining the position outside the lead near the 900 metres.

RACE 6 – SLICK CHICKS PACE – 2030 metres

SUNNY TOWN – Post-race swab sample.

PEBBLE ROCK – Pre race blood sample. Checked and broke rounding the first turn when tightened for room by ICSPOTS.

ICSPOTS – Driver B. Richards pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference in that rounding the first turn he shifted his runner down the track when not sufficiently clear of PEBBLE ROCK and as a result that runner was checked and broke. B. Richards licence to drive in races was suspended for a period of 28 days to commence at midnight 15th January 2021. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account B. Richards’ guilty plea, his driving record and that the incident took place rounding the first turn.

FLEETMASTER NZ – Stewards questioned Driver R. Morris in regards to the performance of the gelding which tired over the final 200 metres. Driver R. Morris stated that the gelding had a tendency to hang out throughout the event. Driver R. Morris further added that he advised connections to make gear changes prior to the gelding’s next race start. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with Trainer C. Harmey in the days subsequent to the event.

Follow up Report - Monday 18th January 2021

Trainer C. Harmey advised that he was disappointed with the performance of the gelding in the event and it was his intention to make a number of gear changes prior to racing or trialing again.

SKEDADDLE SHANNON – Broke in the latter stages of the score up and was out of position at the start. A warning was issued.

SPORTSMANSHIP – Checked and broke rounding the first turn when PEBBLE ROCK was checked.

HASLER – Checked and broke rounding the first turn when PEBBLE ROCK was checked.

ROCOCO – Held up for clear running for the majority of the home straight.

RACE 7 –  PFD FOOD SERVICES PACE – 2030 metres

TALL TALE ­– Raced roughly after the start.

QUICK STEP NZ – Pre-race blood sample. Post-race swab sample.

BATTLECRAFT – Checked after the start when TALL TALE raced roughly.

RACE 8 – MATES 4 HARNESS MAIDEN PACE – 1609 metres

JOSIE ELLA – A false start was declared on the first occasion when the mare broke in the latter stages of the score up resulting in PATERSONS PRIDE being checked. A warning was issued.

ATTAHUA ACE – Checked and broke leaving the back straight on the first occasion when the tempo of the event eased slightly resulting in the gelding improving onto the back of TAKEME TOTHE BEACH.

IGOTCHA – Driver B. Pringle was reminded of his obligations to not reduce the speed of his runner abruptly resulting in runners trailing being checked.

BETTOR WATCH ARDEN NZ – Moved three wide near the 1200 metres before obtaining the lead approaching the 900 metres. Post-race swab sample.

TAKEME TOTHE BEACH – Rounding the first turn was inconvenienced when the paced eased slightly and as a result the mare improved onto the back of BETTOR WATCH ARDEN NZ.

LADYFEELGOOD – Pre-race blood sample.

TOOSHAY – Inconvenienced and raced roughly leaving the back straight on the first occasion when ATTAHUA ACE was checked and broke.

COOLALIE KID – Tired over the final 500 metres to be beaten 80 metres. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare failed to reveal any abnormalities. In view of the performance the mare will be stood down until it can complete one satisfactory trial.

WALLAROY BOY – Pre-race blood sample.

BUDDY CLAYDON – Near the 300 metres checked and broke. Driver B. Mantle was reprimanded under Rule 168(1)(a) for careless driving in that approaching the finish line when held up for clear running he has allowed his runner to improve onto the back of SEELSTERS SONG and as a result contact the sulky wheel of that runner and gallop.

STONE CRACKER - Stewards inquired into the reasons BUDDY CLAYDON being checked and galloping near the 300 metres when racing between STONE CRACKER and WALLAROY BOY. After taking evidence from all drivers and reviewing the films it was established that leaving the 400 metres WALLAROY BOY commenced to shift three wide and as a result BUDDY CLAYDON improved into a narrow run between that runner and STONE CRACKER. A short distance later STONE CRACKER has shifted out slightly and as a result BUDDY CLAYDON was tightened for room and broke. As Stewards could not hold any one driver fully responsible for the incident no action was taken other than to remind Driver M. Neilson (STONE CRACKER) of her obligations when shifting ground.
