PRINCESS KENNY NZ – Driver K Morris was questioned regarding the tactics employed on PRINCESS KENNY NZ, in particular the decision to maintain a solid tempo when racing in the position outside of the leader. K Morris explained that the tempo of the event became unsuitably slow during the early stages. Therefore she elected to improve her position in the running line and leaving the 1600 metres commenced to challenge SOBOMBA for the lead. K Morris added that she was surprised that W Rixon on SOBOMBA was keen to maintain the lead given that runner was first up and had been driven with cover in its most recent starts. With this in mind she continued to place pressure on SOBOMBA however, it became apparent approaching the 1200 metres that the lead would be unavailable. K Morris added that PRINCESS KENNY NZ is a mare that does not like to be restrained and subsequently she believed that PRINCESS KENNY NZ would be better suited if she was able to maintain a genuine tempo and allow her to stride freely. K Morris stated that near the 400 metres PRINCESS KENNY NZ received a slight check and subsequently became unbalanced losing several lengths which contributed to her finishing further back than anticipated. A post – race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Stewards accepted K Morris’s explanation regarding her decision to challenge for the lead between the 1600 metres and the 1200 metres however advised her that, in their opinion, she had erred by not allowing PRINCESS KENNY NZ some respite from the 1200 metres to the 600 metres.
