Vale Ted Massingham

5 June 2025

The Board and Management of Harness Racing New South Wales extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ted Massingham, who sadly passed away last week at the age of 79.

Ted passed away last Saturday after spending several weeks in hospital following a fall.
A lifelong participant in the sport, Ted grew up in western Sydney around Riverstone and Windsor, where his passion for harness racing was sparked by his grandfather’s involvement. He further honed his skills under the guidance of legendary horseman Wally Woods.
In addition to his racing pursuits, Ted worked as a truck driver and managed a sheep farm in Bathurst. But it was harness racing that remained his greatest passion throughout his life.
He was associated with many talented horses, including Jacobs Whiz, Koros Legacy, Leonard George, and Sonny Teal — making a name for himself both as a trainer and a driver.
“Dad was a great driver and at one stage was the youngest to win the Menangle Cup,” said his son, Terry Massingham.
“Even though he wasn’t training in later years, he’d always join me at the races on Saturdays in my transport truck.”
In a touching tribute, Ted’s iconic white and purple striped silks returned to the winners’ circle at Menangle on Tuesday, worn by Caribbean Runa, trained by Trevor Munday.
Ted Massingham will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by the harness racing community.
May he rest in eternal peace.
Funeral details will be shared once confirmed.
