HRNSW launches state-of-the-art harness racing simulator

11 September 2025

Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) officially launched its new driving simulator – the Portable Centre of Excellence – on Eureka night at Club Menangle last Saturday.

Unveiled by the NSW Minister for Gaming and Racing, The Hon. David Harris MP, the simulator provides participants and fans with an immersive and interactive opportunity to experience the thrill of driving a standardbred racehorse.
A first of its kind for the sport in NSW, the simulator is designed to mirror the unique sensations of being in the sulky with the technology serving both as an educational tool and as a fan engagement initiative.
This has been years in the making according to HRNSW Education and Welfare Manager Maurice Logue.
“We’ve invested three-and-a-half years developing the software to drive it,” said Logue.
“It simulates common driver errors, for example if you allow the horse to run into the gate too many times you will break stride plus a number of other key features including earplugs that you can release as well.
“This will go around to various high schools and career markets and attempt to attract people to the industry.”
The driving simulator will also be showcased at major race meetings across the state, including key feature events like the Carnival of Cups, as well as career expos and schools to inspire the next generation of drivers, trainers, and industry participants.
HRNSW Chief Executive Officer Peter Buckman said the launch marks a significant step forward in combining technology with sport.
“Harness racing is a sport that thrives on participation and community connection and the simulator gives people a safe and exciting way to feel what it’s like to drive a horse at speed, and we believe it will be a powerful tool for education, recruitment, and promotion of our industry,” Buckman said.
Of interest, horses you can drive in the simulator include some of our past champions in Walla Walla, Hondo Grattan, Paleface Adios, Westburn Grant, Our Sir Vancelot, King Of Swing, Tiger Tara, Beautide, Bling It On, Karloo Mick and Smooth Satin.
HRNSW will announce a schedule of upcoming appearances for the simulator in the coming weeks.
