Breeders Challenge delivering

19 September 2022

THE current New South Wales Breeders Challenge Series continues to produce some quality racing with a number of youngsters scoring impressive wins during the past week.

On Wednesday night at Bathurst, the Ashlee Grives-trained-and-driven Saveeon (pictured) led throughout, proving that she is a filly with a big future after defeating a smart field and post a quick 1.55.5 mile rating.
But it was Better Be The Best that showed just why his trainer-driver Nathan Turnbull is excited about his future prospects when the colt absolutely annihilated his opposition, scoring by more than 30 metres and rating 1.55 in the colts and geldings’ qualifying heat.
The Penrith Club did well to get through its program on Thursday night in driving rain with two further Breeders Challenge heats highlighting a night of quality racing.
Peaceful, the daughter of former champion racemare Frith, overcame a hard run to rate 1.56 and progress through to the semi-finals for trainer Camron Ross and owner Dianne Kelly.
It was the talented filly’s third win in four starts to date and while she has big shoes to fill, is showing the class of her mother in the early stages of her career.
Captains Knock confirmed the confidence of his trainer Brad Hewitt, winning comfortably in his heat on Thursday night.
Hewitt was able to secure the coveted one-out and one-back trail with the colt and he had something in reserve in the run to the line.
Owner Nicole Elder celebrated a rare quinella in the Alabar heat at Newcastle on Friday night when Love Lou overpowered Jimmy Bling in the closing stages of the race.
The son of Sweet Lou sat back midfield while Jimmy Bling led, and the pair engaged in a spirited tussle all the way down the lane.
The next round of heats on September 27 will be run at Tabcorp Park Menangle which hosted the time-honoured Group 2 Schweppes Carousel on Saturday night, which was taken out by the KerryAnn Morris trained Port Au Prince.
The former Kiwi has only been at Lucky Lodge since July and was driven a treat by Robbie Morris.
KerryAnn has two runners engaged on what is a strong nine-race program at Goulburn this afternoon with Inter Dominion-winning driver Josh Gallagher taking the reins behind Strength Of Heart in Race 1 and Tipping Point in Race 3.
