NSW Mini Trotting Association had another successful carnival with the running of its 31st NSW Mini Trot Championships at Gunning over the Easter period. Over 150 horses from ten NSW affiliated clubs, Victoria and Queensland participated in what proved to be friendly competitive competition over two days
Saturday saw horses compete in three rounds of heats (45 in total) with ponies gaining points from placings to decide the fields for the finals and consolations.
In the Midget section(9 hands and under) there were consolation final wins for Little Ratbag (Eliza Turton), Jelly Bean (Sarah Fox), Miley Cyrus (Wyatt Ducat) and Andy’s Cotton Candy (Andrew Bourke). The twelve top qualifiers contested the Tabcorp Park Menangle Final and after a brilliant beginning Yogi Bear for Tyler Miles from the Newcastle Maitland club, set a cracking pace to lead throughout. Recent Inter Dominion winner Chester’s Lad was gallant to finish second for Cameron Hart while Sarah Marsh brought Fire Storm home for third.

Consolation Finals for the Shetlands (9.1 to 10.2 hands) saw wins to Little Miss Lilly (Morgan Coney) Honey (Abbey Morgan) Sir Walter (Kellee O’Neill) Charlie Rose (Jye Howard-Coney) and Nidya (Bryse McElhinney). The Garrards Horse and Hound Final proved to be an exciting event with Lachlan Manzelmann picking up the catch drive on the Angus Garrard trained, Queenslander visitor Sparkling Star storming home to run down the 32yo veteran Falcon Crest. Falcon Crest was well driven by young Charlie Odgers while last year’s winner Roxy on Home ran third.

Consolation Finals for the Ponies (10.3 to 13 hands) resulted in wins to Golden Studleigh (Phoebe Betts), Diamond Prince (Nic Bourke) and Oprah (Zane Lemon). Harness Racing NSW once again supported the main final and the retiring Energizer who held the record of 6 previous NSW Championship wins with Strawberry Road, was looking to make the record his. The fairy tale was complete when Riverina driver Cameron Hart and Energizer produced a convincing display to defeat Velvet’s Little Star driven by Aleisha Bond with former winner Lumberjack Willie finishing a good third for Darren Moss.
