Fairfield Trotdome Comes Alive On Monday

5 June 2015

Fairfield Harness Racing Club boss Ross Scherf is hoping ‘Mother Nature’ is kind this long weekend.  The J.D Watts Memorial is Fairfield’s feature event of the year and the race has been plagued by wet weather for the past six years.  Despite the conditions, Scherf has been pleased with the crowd in recent years but believes the Carnival Of Cups meeting could be a bumper one if the weather forecasters have it right.

“I can’t remember the last time we have run a JD Watts Memorial and it hasn’t been raining, in fact Channel 9 came out to interview me a few years ago when it rained so much that they called off Randwick and we continued to race,” said Scherf.

“I’ve looked at the weather forecast and it says it will be dry so I am hoping all of the families in the area come out and support the club because there is going to be plenty of entertainment for everyone.”

Scherf announced that the children will be well catered for with a jumping castle and motorised cars.

“The jumping castle is always a favourite with the younger children, we have a jumping castle organised and rather than getting a dodgem track in for the afternoon we have decided to hire some motorised cars for the kids to drive around on, it looks plenty of fun.

“There is plenty for the adults too with eight races and the first gets underway at 2:08pm.”

The Fairfield Club will run two events over 1313 metres, the Moments Of Glory and the Maltese Drivers’ Invitation.

“We try to have a few different events, I think we were one of the first clubs to run shorter races because I can remember all of the work we had to do to be allowed to race over the 1313 metre distance.

“At Fairfield we get great support from a number of local clubs including Mounties and Cabra Vale Diggers and without them we wouldn’t be able to put on such a big day.”

Scherf watches the Fairfield trials closely and believes he has spotted a horse worth following in the first race on Monday.

“Gotta Glow trialled extremely well recently at Fairfield when it led throughout and ran some very smart sectionals, I think it looks the bet of the day.”
