Race 5, MISTER MAGIC MAN

Trainer/Driver N Turnbull was questioned at Young on the 19th of November, regarding the tactics adopted and performance of the gelding in the above race, in particular his decision to leave the one-out one-back position to take over the position outside the leader leaving the 1400 metres and the pace set once in that position. N Turnbull stated that MISTER MAGIC MAN is more of a grinder than a sprinter and had been driven similarly in recent races when successful. He added that he was following APHORISM in the early part of the race and it was looking for cover and the pace was not strong so he elected to move around that runner and when he got to the position outside the leader his runner commenced to over-race setting the fast second quarter sectional time. He further added that he was attempting to restrain his runner during this period of the race, however it would not come back to him, he believed in hindsight he might have had it too fresh being second up from a short spell. N Turnbull further added that he wasn’t too disappointed with the gelding’s performance as he felt that it over-racing had significantly impacted its finishing position.
