Stewards questioned driver C Geary (MAJESTIC MAJOR NZ) in relation to his tactics during the early stages when being able to lead and recorded the first half of the last mile in 54.7 seconds. Driver C Geary explained to Stewards that his instructions from trainer L Jurd were to drive the gelding forward at the start and attempt to lead and then allow the gelding to stride along at a comfortable pace as MAJESTIC MAJOR NZ doesn’t appear to have a high speed sprint at the end of his races and had been unlucky in its previous starts. Mr Geary added that Mr Jurd was of the opinion that MAJESTIC MAJOR NZ would have the best chance of being able roll along and try to take the sprint out of the other runners. Mr Geary explained that after the gelding began well he then allowed the gelding to stride along as per his instructions and explained that as MAJESTIC MAJOR NZ is a big horse it did cover the ground quicker then he anticipated. Mr Geary explained that MAJESTIC MAJOR NZ continued to travel well unto the 600 metres when the gelding was asked to quicken. Mr Geary explained that MAJESTIC MAJOR NZ at that point failed to respond. He further explained that MAJESTIC MAJOR NZ in his opinion didn’t weaken however was unable to increase its speed. Mr Geary was further of the opinion that going forward considering todays performance that they may drive the gelding slightly quieter at the start. Mr Geary explained that when the gelding was under some pressure leaving the 400 metres his gelding had a tendency to shift up the track until the finish. After considering the evidence of Mr Geary and reviewing the patrol footage, Mr Geary’s comments were noted.
