RACE 1 – LETS TROT PACE – 1700 metres
GENERAL – Stewards inquired into the reasons for ROSE OF JULIANA making contact with the sulky of TOOLITTLETOOLATE shortly after passing the 400 metres. After taking evidence from drivers Jack Chapple (TOOLITTLETOOLATE), Arthur Clancy (ROSE OF JULIANA) and review of the available replays it was established that passing the 500 metres the leader OLIVIA SHANNON shifted away from the marker pegs, which resulted in all runners shifting wider, and shortly after ROSE OF JULIANA improved to the inside of TOOLITTLETOOLATE where approaching the turn TOOLITTLETOOLATE shifted in resulting in ROSE OF JULIANA making contact with the sulky of that runner, being checked and breaking gait as a consequence. Upon consideration of the available evidence, Stewards issued Arthur Clancy, driver of ROSE OF JULIANA, with a reprimand for driving in a manner which in the opinion of the Stewards was careless by attempting to the improve to the inside of TOOLITTLETOOLATE without being able to fully occupy the position to that runners inside prior to entering the final turn. Driver Jack Chapple (TOOLITTLETOOLATE) was reprimanded under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference and advised that in the circumstances it was open for him to attempt to provide more racing room for ROSE OF JULIANA after that runner had improved to his inside as they entered the final turn.

In assessing penalty Stewards took into account the HRNSW Penalty Guidelines placing weight on Mr Hurst’s guilty plea, his offence record and the circumstances of the incident, notably that Mr Hurst made some corrective measures prior to the interference occurring and the degree of interference involved. Stewards accordingly imposed a 21 day suspension of his licence to drive in races which was ordered to commence midnight 15 November 2023. Paced roughly inside the final 400 metres.

KISSED BY A ROSE – Driver Nathan Turnbull was questioned regarding the tactics adopted in particular his decision to maintain the lead when TIME TO REACT and EBONY ROCKS improved to his outside during the early stages and commenced to apply pressure. Mr Turnbull explained mindful of the small circumference of the track he felt there was significant benefit in being able to lead should it be possible and for this reason elected to maintain the lead as he did not feel EBONY ROCKS or TIME TO REACT would be suitable runners to follow and was mindful that greater use had been made of those runners during the early stages. Mr Turnbull added that should he have been pressured by one of the more favoured runners which he viewed to be SWEET PARIS NZ, TULHURST PEBBLES or EAGLE ART he would have been more inclined to surrender the lead. Mr Turnbull advised of his intention to drive the mare in a less aggressive manner in future. A post-race veterinary examination of KISSED BY A ROSE failed to reveal any significant findings. Given the beaten margin (49 metres) a warning was issued.
TIME TO REACT – Driver Jett Turnbull was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the mare in particular his decision to persist with attempting to obtain the position outside the leader ahead of EBONY ROCKS in the early stages. Mr Turnbull advised he was instructed to drive the mare forward in an attempt to obtain a position in the two wide line with a view of then surrendering that position to a more favoured runner which in his view would have been either SWEET PARIS NZ, EAGLE ART or TULHURST PEBBLES. Mr Turnbull added that he felt EBONY ROCKS would likely surrender this position and continued to apply some pressure to that mare during the early stages, however once it was apparent that runner would be maintaining its position he then restrained TIME TO REACT to the rear of the field to obtain a position with cover. Trainer Nathan Turnbull confirmed the instructions issued and advised it would now be the stable’s intention to drive the mare in more conservative manner in future. A post-race veterinary examination of TIME TO REACT failed to reveal any significant findings. Given the beaten margin the mare would now be stood down from racing until trialling to the satisfaction of Stewards on one occasion.
