GENERAL – At approximately 7.40pm (between races 3 & 4) Stewards directed that all horses and drivers remain in the race day stalls due to significant thunder storm activity in the immediate vicinity.  An indefinite delay ensued.  At approximately 8pm a significant storm passed through the racecourse delivering heavy rain and hail.  This continued for some 20-30 minutes.  Upon inspection the track was found to have significant damage caused by the storm and subsequent water runoff.  It was decided that track staff would be given an opportunity to undertake remedial action. This was conveyed to participants and public via public address.  At the completion of the remedial works Stewards undertook further inspections and were satisfied that the track was safe for racing and after liaising with the TAB and SKY Racing the following amended times were confirmed.

Race 4 – 9.37pm

Race 5 – 10pm

Race 6 – 10.19pm

Race 7 – 10.45pm

Race 8 – 11.04pm

Race 9 – 11.22pm.

RACE 1 – ALLIED EXPRESS PACE – 1609 metres

WESTERN STYLE – Driver W Rixon was questioned regarding the gelding performing above market expectations ($56).  W Rixon explained that WESTERN STYLE had been racing relatively well and he is a horse that cannot make his own luck in races and requires races run to suit.  He added that the fast first quarter assisted him as ONE FOR THE RODI worked to cross to the lead and left WESTERN STYLE in a one out one back position.  W Rixon said that when the field progressed past the 400 metres he was relatively confident as WESTERN STYLE only had to replicate his finishing sections from recent races to be in the finish.  W Rixon’s explanation was noted.  Mr Rixon was advised that Stewards expected that WESTERN STYLE would continue to race in a consistent manner.  Post-race swab samples were obtained.

SAHARA SIROCCO – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Broke gait during the score up and was out of position at the start.  A warning was issued.

PUMP THE BRAKES – Had difficulty securing clear running until shifting out passing the 100 metres.

UNFAZED NZ – Approaching the 200 metres commenced to hang in when placed under pressure proving somewhat difficult to drive.

RACE 2 – BESTINBEDS.COM.AU PACE – 1609 metres

CASH N FLOW NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Raced roughly as the gelding crossed the finish line and broke gait shortly thereafter.  A post-race veterinary examination of CASH N FLOW NZ revealed the gelding to be significantly lame in the near hind leg.  Trainer’s representative L McCarthy explained that CASH N FLOW NZ would more than likely be retired from racing.  Irrespective, the gelding would be given a significant spell.  Adopting the veterinary recommendations CASH N FLOW NZ was stood down from racing for a period of 28 days and until a veterinary certificate of fitness is submitted.

MACH DA VINCI NZ – Post-race swab samples were obtained.

PORT AU PRINCE NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.

RACE 5 – GOOD TIDES HARD SELTZER CHRISTMAS GIFT HEAT 2 – 1609 metres

HAY THERE JOE – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Failed to run on over the concluding stages.  Near the 250 metres when weakening sustained a slight contact to the off side sulky wheel resulting in HAY THERE JOE carrying a flat tyre over the remainder of the event.  A post-race veterinary examination of HAY THERE JOE revealed no obvious abnormalities.

MARATHON MAN NZ – Underwent a pre and post-race veterinary examination as per HRNSW animal welfare guidelines.  No abnormalities were detected.  Held up and checked behind HAY THERE JOE between the 450 metres and the 250 metres and when endeavouring to avoid that runner, made slight contact with the off side sulky wheel of HAY THERE JOE at which point driver J Rattray shifted MARATHON MAN NZ out and as a result MAGIC MATTEO and CONSTANTINA were hampered.  Driver J Rattray was issued with a reprimand under rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference.

SKITTLE BOMB NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.

SIR RICHARD LEE – Near the 1500 metres had to be steadied away from ALWAYS THUNDER when that runner broke gait.  Shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages and near the 100 metres caused MAGIC MATTEO to be placed in restricted room and taken out towards MISSED THE TRUTH.  Driver R Morris was issued with a reprimand under rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference.

MISSED THE TRUTH – Passing the 1500 metres had to be steadied when hampered as a result of SIR RICHARD LEE which had been taken out by ALWAYS THUNDER.  Caught wide during the early stages before being restrained to the rear of the field near the 800 metres.  Post-race swab samples were obtained.

CARLOGAMBINO NZ – Leaving the 400 metres was checked by the tiring SUNSTAR.

ALIBERTO NZ – When crossing to the lead approaching the 800 metres eased the pace resulting in all runners along the marker pegs having to be steadied. KING OF LOVE NZ – Passing the 1600 metres was hampered by SIMONE LINDENNY NZ which broke gait.  Post-race swab samples were obtained.

BUSLIN BRODY – Improved three wide during the middle stages.  Tired significantly over the concluding stages and passing the 500 metres shifted in on two separate occasions causing GUNNER to be tightened and checked .  When questioned trainer/driver T Xiriha explained that in his opinion BUSLIN BRODY may not have handled the travel from Victoria.  He added that both in the preliminary and in the event BUSLIN BRODY did not travel as well as expected and when he looked to improve during the middle stages he had to drive the gelding with significant vigour which is unusual.  T Xiriha added that he was disappointed with the gelding’s performance and he would potentially spell BUSLIN BRODY prior to its next start.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed an elevated heart rate.  T Xiriha was advised that BUSLIN BRODY would be stood down from racing until it can complete one satisfactory official for what was deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance.

SIMONE LINDENNY NZ – When leading became unbalanced and broke gait passing the 1600 metres.  In view of its recent record connections were advised that a warning would be issued.

HAVE NO FEAR NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.

GUNNER – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Near the 500 metres when looking to improve to the inside of BUSLIN BRODY that runner shifted in under pressure which caused GUNNER to lose all momentum and be tightened and checked.  Shortly after, as GUNNER was attempting to improve his position to the inside of BUSLIN BRODY on a second occasion GUNNER was hampered by that runner and subsequently failed to run on over the concluding stages.

SUNNY GEE – Approaching the 2000 metres when attempting to restrain SUNNY GEE driver R Morris had to take the gelding wider on the track when it became apparent that HAVE NO FEAR NZ and KYVALLEY FINN had improved to his inside. Subsequently SUNNY GEE became unbalanced and broke gait.  No action was taken due to the fact that the leading runners were racing well away from the marker pegs and as those runners folded down to assume a position closer to the marker pegs HAVE NO FEAR NZ and KYVALLEY FINN had improved quickly to the inside of SUNNY GEE and as soon as R Morris became aware of their presence he immediately corrected SUNNY GEE without tightening either runner.
