CAESARS ROCKSTAR – When questioned in relation to the performance, Driver S Ison explained that after being caught wide in the early stages he was obliged to restrain to the rear of the field entering the back straight on the first occasion. He said that after this CAESARS ROCKSTAR travelled well and when urged forward inside the 500 metres responded well, however rounding the turn near the 300 metres hung in, became unbalanced and raced roughly for a short distance. He said that after this he was obliged to shift wider on the track to continue to go forward and under all the circumstances CAESARS ROCKSTAR ran to the finish relatively well. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

WESTERN RICKI – Trainer/Driver Miss C Sutherland was reprimanded under Rule 170(1)(a), for allowing her left foot to drop below the sulky rest when activating gear near the 500 metres.

He said that entering the back straight on the first occasion he attempted to take a position behind ROCK RUBY ROCK in the running line, however the tempo was such at this stage that he had difficulty restraining SAFE JEWELS and elected to go forward in an attempt to obtain the position outside the lead. He said that he was unable to muster sufficient speed to achieve this in the back straight and was caught wide for some distance inside the 1000 metres before obtaining a covered position in the running line approaching the winning post with a lap remaining. He said that from this point SAFE JEWELS travelled relatively well, however when placed under pressure inside the 500 metres could not respond and ran to the finish in a disappointing manner. Further, he stated that he felt that the effort expended by SAFE JEWELS when attempting to establish a position outside the lead contributed to this. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a slow recovery rate. Trainer Mr G Coney could offer no excuse for the poor performance and said he intended to make alterations to the geldings’ track work if its recovery was satisfactory. He said should that be the case SPORTSCAM NZ would be nominated to race at Tamworth on the 22 February 2024.
