RACE 1 – WARDS ACCOUNTING GROUP TROTTERS STANDING START HANDICAP – 2300 metres

ADDICTIVE STRIDE – Slow to begin and trotted roughly for some distance and will now be placed on its last chance in the draw.

DAIMYO – Pre-race blood sample. Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight. Driver Dean Cernovskis was reprimanded under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) in that shortly after passing the 400 metres he permitted DAIMYO to shift out resulting in RAKERO WARRIOR NZ being tightened and placed in restricted room.

PHOEBE MAJESTIC NZ – Driver Chris Geary was questioned regarding the performance of the mare which finished in 7th placing beaten 89 metres. Mr Geary explained PHOEBE MAJESTIC NZ over raced after obtaining the lead which he felt told on the mare over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of PHOEBE MAJESTIC NZ failed to reveal any significant findings. PHOEBE MAJESTIC NZ will now be stood down from racing until trialling to the satisfaction of Stewards on one occasion.  Hung in and trotted roughly rounding the final turn and contacted marker pegs as a consequence.

RAKERO WARRIOR NZ – Stood flat footed as the start was effected and will continue to be placed outside the draw in future standing start events. Tightened passing the 400 metres when DAIMYO shifted out.

LAST CLANSMAN – Checked passing the 400 metres when PHOEBE MAJESTIC NZ commenced to give ground. Broke clear of interference approaching the 250 metres and a warning was issued.

FOOTTAPPER – Hung in and contacted the outside sulky wheel of SALUTE STRIDE NZ when that runner commenced to give ground passing the 600 metres. Driver Robert Morris was issued a reprimand under Rule 168(1)(a) for careless driving. In not taking more severe action against Mr Morris, Stewards were mindful of the contributing factors to this incident. Post-race swab sample.

SALUTE STRIDE NZ – Carried a flat tyre from the 600 metres onwards and tired over the concluding stages to be beaten 66 metres. A post-race veterinary examination of SALUTE STRIDE NZ failed to reveal any significant findings.

RACE 2 – MULTIQUIP AGGREGATES TROTTERS STANDING START HANDICAP – 2300 metres

VALLEY STAR NZ – Pre-race blood sample. Locked wheels with MY LIGHTNING MCQUEEN NZ shortly after straightening resulting in VALLEY STAR NZ being checked. Driver Will Rixon was questioned regarding his action with his right arm shortly after VALLEY STAR NZ and MY LIGHTNING MCQUEEN NZ locked wheels. Mr Rixon explained the wheels had become severely locked and mindful of his positioning relative to the remainder of the field he felt it was in the best interests for all to the unlock wheels as soon as possible. Mr Rixon further added he was mindful that MY LIGHTNING MCQUEEN NZ had commenced to shift out as the runners locked wheels which he felt presented a greater danger of the incident being more severe and increased the potential of either himself or Ms Arvidsson being tipped from the sulky should the wheels remained locked together for an extended period. Mr Rixon added that for this reason he used his right arm in an attempt to free the two sulky wheels which was ultimately successful. Upon consideration of the matter, Stewards issued Mr Rixon a reprimand under Rule 170(2) for allowing his body to protrude outside the confines of the sulky and advised him that whilst they accepted his actions were done in the interests of safety, he must ensure he has exhausted all other possible avenues prior to employing similar measures in future.

SHOULD BEABARCA – Slow out and will continue to be placed outside the draw in future standing start events.

ALDEBARAN JENSEN – Broke clear of interference passing the 900 metres. A warning was issued.

BELLA DANZA – Pre-race blood sample. Fractious during the initial stages of the score up and broke for a short distance before shifting out after the start was effected. A warning was placed on the record of BELLA DANZA. In not taking more action against the mare, Stewards were mindful the most recent occasion BELLA DANZA had offended was in August 2024, some 5 months prior. Post-race swab sample.

CRACKABRIE NZ – Held up during the early part of the straight. Driver Klayton Bigeni pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) in that approaching the 150 metres he permitted CRACKABRIE NZ to shift out when not sufficiently clear of CHARLIES ACE NZ resulting in that runner being checked and pacing roughly. In assessing penalty, Stewards considered the HRNSW penalty guidelines placing particular weight on Mr Bigeni’s guilty plea, his good driving record (1 suspension in 287 drives) and the circumstances of the incident. Stewards accordingly imposed a 7 day suspension of his licence to drive in races which was ordered to commence Saturday 25 January 2025.

CHARLIES ACE NZ – Checked and paced roughly passing the 150 metres.

RACE 5 – FARMER JOES A FAMILY BUSINESS PACE – 1609 metres

TOP THE ACE – Underwent pre and post-race veterinary examinations due to the gelding having started in more than 200 races. These examinations did not reveal any significant findings. Mr Rixon explained TENACIOUS D NZ was first up for almost 12 months and in his view the gelding did not travel well when leading. He further advised he was of the belief it was the first time TENACIOUS D NZ had led in a race which may have contributed.
