Ms Fitzpatrick explained ROCKSIE ROCK had difficulty improving into the race when positioned in the rear half of the field due to the slow second quarter (31.7 seconds) which resulted in the final stage of the race being run quickly and ROCKSIE ROCK being unable to make ground when positioned wide on the track.
STELLINA – Pre-race warm up. Driver Jai Meikle was fined $50 under Rule 162(1)(h) for failing to be in position when the start was effected. Mr Meikle was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on STELLINA in particular his decision passing the 800 metres to not follow BROOKESSMARTDANCER when that runner commenced to improve 3 wide. Mr Meikle explained he was mindful STELLINA had been out of position during the score up and he had made some use of the mare in order to attempt to fill its position prior to the start being effected and for this reason he was concerned that should he improve 3 wide, albeit with cover, he may be making too much use of STELLINA in the circumstances. Mr Meikle further explained STELLINA had difficulty in making ground when positioned wide rounding the final turn when the race was run at its fastest.
