RACE 1 – TAB VENUE MODE PACE – 1720 metres
SILENT REACTION – Pre-race blood sample. Approaching the 100 metres received heavy contact on the rear of the sulky from DILETTO.
CRACKABRIE NZ - Restrained quickly at the start causing LITTLE CESSNA to be hampered. When questioned, Driver K Bigeni explained he was instructed by trainer S Bigeni Jnr to not make use of the mare in the early stages and look to drive her conservatively with cover. He added the mare was first up from a short break and he may have restrained the mare further back and more hastily than necessary at the start. He added that with the benefit of hindsight he may have been better suited to allow CRACKABRIE NZ to slide across after the start and this would have afforded him an opportunity to race in a position that was further forward but still with cover. K Bigeni stated he improved wider on the track leaving the 400 metres and CRACKABRIE NZ was forced four and five wide round the final turn and in his opinion the mare finished the race off well. Trainer S Bigeni Jnr confirmed his instructions however was of the view that his driver may have used too much restraint in the early stages from a relatively good barrier draw and he may have misunderstood his instructions. Irrespective, he added he was pleased with the performance of CRACKABRIE NZ.
SMIRKS LIKA BOSS -Improved three wide in the early stages before crossing to the position outside the leader near the 1400 metres.

At a subsequent inquiry Driver V Duncan pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 168(1)(a) for careless driving in that when improving on DILETTO near the 200 metres he released the deafeners when there was no run available and failed to make sufficient effort to make DILETTO from racing up to and contacting heavily the back of SILENT REACTION leaving the 150 metres. In assessing penalty consideration was given to V Duncan’s guilty plea, forthright evidence and his relative inexperience. V Duncan had his licence to drive in races suspended for a period of 7 days.
