DOUGS RULES – When questioned in relation to the tactics adopted in the early stages, Driver A Varga explained that despite his wide barrier position he was instructed to drive forward to obtain the lead or take a position outside it. He said after driving with urgency in the early stages he was caught wide and unable to cross MY ROCK MOVES for some distance. He said entering the back straight he was still in the 3 wide position and at this stage it would have been detrimental to restrain to the rear of the field, therefore he elected to continue to drive forward to attempt to establish the lead. He said that for some distance in the back straight KARALTA COURAGE continued a forward move which obliged him to maintain pressure on DOUGS RULES, however he eventually obtained the position outside it despite racing at a solid tempo. He said in the middle stages DOUGS RULES travelled relatively well however when placed under pressure from the 600 metres, it began to weaken and became unresponsive, which he attributed to the extended effort in the early stages when attempting to drive to his instructions. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
