CAPTAIN GROOVE – Pre race blood sample.

ULTIMATE EMPIRE – When questioned in relation to the tactics adopted during the early and middle stages, trainer / driver Mr M Formosa explained that due to the slow tempo in the early stages he elected to drive forward rounding the turn after the start in an attempt to race outside the lead, as the gelding had performed well previously when being driven in that position. He said that when attempting this, GRUMPY SHANNON shifted wider forward of him which obliged him to continue in a 4 wide position and the gelding was unable to muster sufficient speed to cross that runner, which eventually raced outside the lead and he was left racing in a 3 wide position with a lap remaining. He said that at this point given the manner that his drive was travelling, it would have been disadvantageous to restrain to obtain cover and allowed it to continue forward whilst being wide. He stated that despite this ULTIMATE EMPIRE continued to respond, however its run faded inside the 100m, which he attributed to the extra ground it was obliged to cover.

LASTING MEMORY – Trainer Mr R Alchin was fined $50 (AR210), for failing to declare himself as the driver by the prescribed time.

RACE 6 – GRACE PANELLA RACING PACE – 1609 metres

BRING YOUR BEST – When questioned in relation to the performance, driver B Hughes explained that he had intended to obtain a forward position with cover after the start and drove vigorously to achieve this, however he could not cross FAY IRENE and when BODYLINE restrained outside him, he was left outside the lead without cover. He said that the gelding resented racing in this position, raced fiercely, would not settle and as a result weakened noticeable inside the 500m when placed under pressure. He said that, had the gelding obtained cover in the early stages it would have been more competitive and stated that should he drive it in future, he would make a greater effort to achieve this. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.

BODYLINE – unable to obtain clear running for some distance in the early part of the home straight and had to be shifted wider to go forward.

HASLER – Had to be steadied and lost some ground rounding the turn after the start when crowded by SEAMARK (NZ), which shifted in when not quite clear. J Meikle, the driver of SEAMARK (NZ) was reprimanded (AR163(1)(a)(iii)).

LEWIE KELLY – Trainer Mr R Alchin was fined $50 (AR210), for failing to declare himself as the driver by the prescribed time.
