STELLINA – Caught wide in the early stages before being restrained toward the rear of the field. Held up for clear running until passing the 100 metres. When questioned regarding the tactics employed on STELLINA, Driver S Piltz explained from the draw and the short distance it was not an option to try and drive the mare forward therefore he looked to find a position in the running line and subsequently settled further back than anticipated. S Piltz added he trailed OUR FIRE AND DELIGHT NZ over the final 400 metres, released deafeners near the 300 metres and started to apply his whip to STELLINA to stay on the back of that runner. S Piltz stated that leaving the 200 metres he remained on the back of OUR FIRE AND DELIGHT NZ so that STELLINA could be held up for one run before shifting her wider near the 100 metres. After considering S Piltz’s explanation and reviewing the films, S Piltz was advised that in the opinion of Stewards he had erred in not shifting STELLINA wider shortly after the 200 metres to improve to the outside of OUR FIRE AND DELIGHT NZ. S Piltz was advised to ensure he always drives in a manner that displays both initiative and judgement.

HESAA LISTER – Passing the 1400 metres reduced the tempo in the running line resulting in EBBONY STORM which was trailing being inconvenienced. Driver W Rixon was advised to exercise care when reducing the tempo in races in similar circumstances. Near the 150 metres improved quickly to the back of APEX STRIDE which was giving ground and shifted out and in doing so ALWAYS A SAM was taken out towards HES MY REASON resulting in those runners engaging sulky wheels and being hampered. W Rixon was issued a reprimand under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference. In issuing a reprimand, Stewards were mindful of the contribution from APEX STRIDE which was giving ground quickly at that point.
ARMA THE GREAT – Unable to secure clear running at any stage during the home straight and was not fully tested.
APEX STRIDE – Raced three wide in the early stages before working forward to the position outside the leader near the 1100 metres. Near the 1400 metres had to be steadied off the back of EBBONY STORM which was being eased and subsequently APEX STRIDE raced ungenerously and shifted out resulting in ALWAYS A SAM making slight contact with the offside wheel of APEX STRIDE.
ALWAYS A SAM – Near the 1400 metres raced ungenerously and had to be steadied off the back of APEX STRIDE when the pace was reduced. Subsequently ALWAYS A SAM made slight contact with the offside wheel of APEX STRIDE which caused ALWAYS A SAM to be checked and broke gait.
