He added that it didn’t improve forward as easily as he expected it to and near the 1200 metres he could see that ALWAYS BE LUCKY which was racing outside the leader had commenced to over-race and he attempted to get cover behind it however SAINT GUTHO improved to his inside and he was unable to shift-in to that position. He further added that he continued to improve three wide in the hope ALWAYS BE LUCKY may improve to the lead or he may have been able to get a gap to get on its back near the 1000 metres however neither of those things eventuated. B McDonough added that after leaving the 1000 metres he held his runner together as he felt at that stage of the race restraining to get cover at the rear of the field would be detrimental to his chances but the colt was under pressure near the 600 metres. He further added that he was somewhat disappointed with the run but added that the colt had basically been in work since January and it was his intention to give it a spell. A post-race Veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Given the circumstances connections were advised that it would be required to perform a re-qualifying trial prior to resuming racing. B McDonough reported in the days following the race that the colt had a nasal discharge which he felt may have effected it on the night.
