RACE 1 – THE TAB APP PACE – 1740 metres
LOTUSBIRD – Underwent pre and post-race veterinary examinations due to the filly having not started in the preceding 12 months. Neither examination revealed any significant abnormalities. Post-race swab.
ULTIMATE GLADIATOR NZ – ($3.90) Pre-race swab. Driver Reece Maguire was queried into the tactics adopted upon the gelding in particular if he gave consideration to direct the gelding three (3) wide from the 600m when racing in the one-one position in advance of THE WICKED WARRIOR which was improving forward three (3) wide at that stage of the event resulting in ULTIMATE GLADIATOR NZ being held up and failing to gain clear running in the home straight. Mr Maguire advised he did not give consideration to direct out at that stage of the event as he felt would be detrimental to his chance being exposed such a distance from the finish as he was confident ISLAND YANKEE which whom he was following in the event was racing outside the leader would bring him into the event however when that runner failed to let down as expected ULTIMATE GLADIATOR NZ was held up for clear running & was unable at any stage to direct the gelding up or down the track passing the 400m without causing interference. Mr Maguire added ULTIMATE GLADIATOR NZ was only having its second start for the stable as the gelding’s only prior start was leading throughout. Upon consideration of the explanation tendered by Mr Maguire & review of the available replays Stewards felt the tactics adopted were not unreasonable in the circumstances & noted his comments. Driver Reece Maguire was issued a reprimand for driving where was insufficient room when attempting to improve between LOTUSBIRD & ISLAND YANKEE in the home straight.
