RACE 2 – MAJOR OAK @ THE PACEWAY – BOOK NOW PACE – 1720 metres

OLLIE ONE SHOT – Stewards questioned driver P Tanti in relation to the tactics adopted in particular his decision to maintain the lead during the early stages when pressured from WATCH AFRICANDANCE whilst having THE COUNTY SHERIFF also improving in a three wide position.  Mr Tanti explained that he elected to use the gelding’s good draw from barrier one to its advantage however noted that he was racing up in grade he elected to try and hold the lead forward of WATCH AFRICANDANCE as he was not of the opinion that that filly was a suitable runner to hand up to.  Mr Tanti explained that passing the 1400 metres when it appeared WATCH AFRICANDANCE had ceased its challenge, he noted that THE COUNTY SHERIFF improved shortly thereafter and that runner was a more suitable runner for his runner to take cover on and as a result considering the early burn of the event he elected to take cover from THE COUNTY SHERIFF.  Mr Tanti explained that he was disappointed in the overall performance of OLLIE ONE SHOT and may have to reassess the way he drives the gelding in this grade.  In view of the performance of OLLIE ONE SHOT the gelding was stood down until it completes one requalifying trial.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

WATCH AFRICANDANCE – Stewards questioned driver G McElhinney in relation to the tactics adopted in particular his decision to challenge for the lead until a point leaving the 1400 metres.  Mr McElhinney explained that after beginning well he was of the view that OLLIE ONE SHOT would hand up considering its most recent form to his runner and as a result pressed forward to try and obtain the lead.  Mr McElhinney explained that he was surprised when OLLIE ONE SHOT elected to maintain the lead and noting that he had THE COUNTY SHERIFF racing to his outside he felt it would be in his runner’s best interest to try and obtain the lead. When it became apparent that OLLIE ONE SHOT was not going to hand up the lead to his runner he then allowed THE COUNTY SHERIFF to improve forward and as a result was caught racing in the position outside of the leader.  Mr McElhinney explained that considering his runner’s run at Penrith on 30 October when able to lead and win he was surprised by the tactics adopted by the leader and felt that the early burn had contributed to his runner’s overall performance however was satisfied with the way the filly found the line considering the run afforded.  Stewards noted his comments.
