LADY ROCKABELLUM – Driver J Dean was questioned on his tactics adopted in the early stages of the event and the overall performance of the mare who gave ground over the final 300 metres to be beaten 34.4 metres. He stated the mare has won the majority of her races when leading the event and when beginning well from a good barrier was of the belief that MAGIC TULHURST would surrender the lead if he applied pressure, when leaving the 1200 metres realised that he would not be able to obtain the lead and as a result raced outside the leader which proved detrimental to the mare’s overall performance.

He stated the gelding races best when leading or racing outside the leader and shortly after the start when racing three wide with cover the gelding travelled comfortably until the 1400 metres when having no cover the gelding dropped the bit was unable to muster the required speed to obtain the position outside the lead. Considering the stage of the race passing the 900 metres he raced three wide as it would have been detrimental to his performance to restrain at that stage. He further added that although racing wide throughout the event believed the gelding although yielding ground, finished the race off well considering the hard run throughout the event.
