ROCKSIE ROCK – Stewards questioned trainer/driver B Muscat in relation to the tactics adopted in particular the reasons for the gelding racing three wide for the majority of the event. Mr Muscat explained that during the early stages of the event his intentions were to restrain the gelding however shortly after the start a number of runners to his inside had commenced to restrain so he looked for a position in the running line however when that did not eventuate approaching the 1200 metres, he noted that at this point LOCHIEL NZ which was racing outside of the leader looked to be looking for cover and he elected to improve ROCKSIE ROCK forward at this stage. Mr Muscat added that when looking to improve, LOCHIEL NZ improved to its inside and approaching the 800 metres it became apparent that he was not going to be able to obtain the position outside of the leader and considering the distance remaining did not feel it would be in the gelding’s best interest to restrain at this stage of the event. Mr Muscat explained that passing the 400 metres, considering the run afforded, he shifted ROCKSIE ROCK back down towards the marker pegs to try and save some ground and noted that he felt that the gelding was a victim of circumstance in today’s event. Stewards noted his comments however advised Mr Muscat to ensure that he drives with greater judgement in future. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
