DEVIOUS MINDS – Pre-race blood sample. Stewards questioned Driver R Morris in relation to the tactics adopted when holding the lead in the early stages when challenged by WILLOWS GIRL until the 1300 metres and then RIPPLES NZ until the 1200 metres. Mr Morris explained that at it’s most recent run he had surrendered the lead in the middle stages of the event to WILLOWS GIRL and was only beaten a short margin of 1.6 metres in that event. Mr Morris added in tonight’s event, he elected to try and hold the lead with DEVIOUS MINDS however after being challenged by WILLOWS GIRL in the early stages he was concerned that if he allowed RIPPLES NZ to progress forward that runner may take cover from SPARKLING SEA which would have placed him three back along the marker pegs which Mr Morris was not of the belief would have been suitable to his filly. Mr Morris stated the filly had been performing well enough over its recent runs to be successful whilst leading. Mr Morris explained in hindsight he may have been better suited to take cover from RIPPLES NZ, however noted in his opinion DEVIOUS MINDS was slightly disappointing compared to her most recent performance in tonight’s event. Stewards noted his comments.
SPARKLING SEA – Pre-race blood sample. Stewards questioned Trainer/Driver D Hewitt in relation to the tactics adopted in particular from the 700 metres when electing to improve three wide at that stage. Mr Hewitt explained he was anticipating moving down the back straight and trying to the position outside the leader prior to the turn however when improving three wide the tempo of the event quickened significantly into a 27.7 second third quarter and as a result he was then caught racing three wide for the remainder of the event. Stewards noted his comments.
