RACE 1 – CATTLEWASH STANDING AT YIRRIBEE PACE – 2300 metres
SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ – Pre-race blood sample. Immediately following the completion of the event the Stewards ordered the hold all tickets announcement to be made to allow the Stewards the opportunity to review the concluding stages of the event with regards to SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ breaking gait under pressure and remaining in a gallop over the final 75 metres. After reviewing the available films, Stewards were satisfied that upon SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ breaking stride passing the 75 metres, Driver Cameron Hart immediately commenced to restrain the gelding and as a result lost ground and in doing so met his obligations under Rule 154(1) and subsequently the All Clear was given on the judges numbers of 10 – 5 – 3 – 6. After considering the recent record of SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ, a warning was issued. Post-race swab sample.

COLOSSAL HOPE – Broke stride during the early stages of the score up and as a result was out of position at the start. After considering the recent record of the gelding a warning was issued. Stewards questioned Driver Michael Stanley with regards to the tactics he adopted through the early stages of the event, whereby he elected to improve forward from a position on the marker pegs approaching the 1500 metres until a point where he was able to occupy a position behind the leader passing the 1450 metres when TUKAHA broke stride. Mr Stanley advised Stewards the horse was in a mood from the moment it went on the track for the preliminary and after breaking stride in the score up he felt he didn’t have to chase the field too hard to find himself in a midfield position when the pace of the event slackened approaching the 1900 metres. Mr Stanley further advised that the gelding commenced to over race and given the gelding lacks speed, he normally looks to drive the horse in a forward manner and he felt it was in the horse’s best interest at that point of the event to work forward hoping to obtain the lead from HEEZA MALTEEZA which is not a noted leader, however passing the 1700 metres it became obvious Mr Gallagher was unwilling to surrender the lead on HEEZA MALTEEZA and he was fortunate to be able to shift down the track to a position behind that runner approaching the 1450 metres when TUKAHA broke stride. Mr Stanley further added the horse dropped the bit as soon as he obtained the position on the back of HEZZA MALTEEZA and commenced to hang in. Mr Stanley further added COLOSSAL HOPE stops and starts in its track work and may not be suited to taking cover in its races. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Stanley, Stewards advised Mr Stanley that they believed he had erred in electing to progress forward from the 1700 metres, in that the likelihood of him obtaining the lead at that stage of the event was limited and would ultimately ensure his runner raced without cover for the remainder of the event after already having to do additional work to catch the field as a result of making an error in the score up. However, in the circumstances, given the horses manners, normal racing pattern albeit from a limited career to date and the tempo of the event Stewards did not believe the tactics he adopted were unreasonable and determined to take no further action other than to remind Mr Stanley of his obligation to ensure he drives his runners in a manner which gives them the best possible opportunity to finish in the best possible position. Trainer Michael Stanley advised Stewards in the days subsequent to the race meeting that COLOSSAL HOPE had some swelling in its offside knee and has been examined by the stable Veterinarian who determined that the swelling was not as a result of any significant injury. Mr Stanley further advised that COLOSSAL HOPE will be given a week of rest in the paddock and the opportunity to reset before determining any future plans.

Mr Painting advised Stewards he was disappointed in the performance of the gelding which travelled well throughout the event, however failed to offer anything from the 600 metres. Mr Painting further advised the horse had displayed signs of nasal discharge after the running of the event and in his opinion may be in the early stages of a virus. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Painting, Stewards determined to note his comments however a warning was issued in relation to the performance of the gelding. Trainer Jackson Painting advised Stewards in the days subsequent to the event that BETTORS MAGIC had not eaten since racing and appeared to have further developed an illness.
