Clare Carroll celebrates maiden driving victory

"HALFWAY down the straight I said to myself 'I'm going to get this' and my heart nearly popped out of my chest."

That's how Clare Carroll described the moment she realised she was about to register her initial win in Bathurst on Wednesday night.

Having her 10th drive, the Mini Trots graduate reined Bertie Jones to an upset win as a $19 outsider.

Beginning Mini Trots at the tender age of five, Carroll obtained her race driving licence earlier this year.

"I had so much fun in the Mini Trots, but driving in real races is amazing," the 17-year-old said. "To get my first win is something I will never forget.

"Halfway down the straight I said to myself 'I'm going to get this' and my heart nearly popped out of my chest.

"I was in a lot of shock as I never went out there thinking we'd win."

Having his second start since December 2024, Bertie Jones led throughout from the pole to complete a metre-and-a-half victory from Shazadele, with Sabella Shannon two-and-a-half metres away third.

What doubled as a terrific training feat by Dean and Kerry McDowell, Bertie Jones rated 1:55.7 over 1730 metres.

"I only started working for the McDowells this month and for them to give me my first win is amazing and I am so grateful," Carroll said. "I can't thank them enough."
