HRNSW introduces the NSW Bred Series

1 March 2023

THE inaugural NSW Bred Series will start this May as a precursor to the Breeders Challenge Blue, Major and Regional Series for juvenile pacers later in the season.

With a series of heats and finals across the state, the new racing initiative is for Breeders Challenge eligible two and three-year-old pacers which will be continued in June and July.
The first round of heats start the week of May 8 with a second round of heats the following week and finals at Tabcorp Park Menangle on June 3.
Two rounds of heats will be conducted in each region but horses can compete at any track across the state. Heats will be conducted at Leeton, Penrith, Parkes, Newcastle, Tamworth, Wagga and Dubbo.
All heats will carry prizemoney of $9,996 with finals worth $30,600.
The NSW Bred Series allows connections of juvenile pacers an opportunity to race for lucrative prizemoney before being aimed at the Breeders Challenge Series according to Harness Racing New South Wales Chief Executive John Dumesny.
“When the racing season shifted to a calendar year a void was created in the middle months so the Board and Management of HRNSW work-shopped a series which would deliver on a number of fronts,” said Dumesny.
“These three series’ will provide great prizemoney for horses which possibly didn’t compete in the early classics but are heading towards the rich Breeders Challenge races later in the year.
“Whilst the races are restricted to one-win horses we believe there should be sufficient emerging horses in training to draw from across the state to ensure full fields in the finals.
“Importantly the first eligibility condition is for sustained Breeders Challenge horses owned and raced by their breeders something stakeholders have been seeking for some while.
“These breeder/owners are the greater portion of ownership in the Breeders Challenge and many consider themselves to be the backbone of the industry.”
HRNSW will release the conditions, dates and tacks for the Breeders Challenge Blue, Major and Regional Series during the Industry Roadshows that are scheduled from March 6 around the State.
