RACE 3 – NSWBC WESTERN REGION 2YO FILLIES FINAL – 1730 metres

General: Prior to the declaration of all-clear, Stewards considered a protest lodged by Ashlee Grives, the driver of the 2nd placed SAVEEON against 1st placed WINDY HILL TARA (Amanda Turnbull) with the grounds of the protest being interference approaching the 300m. On review Stewards found that racing passing the 400m SAVEEON commence to hang inwards under pressure when progressing forward to the outside of WINDY HILL TARA as that runner was being directed up the track approaching the 300m with the simultaneous movement from both runners which locked wheels momentarily prior to both runners being fully tested for the full length of the home straight. Although acknowledging interference, Stewards were unable to find that such interference had an effect as to the finishing positions noting the manner that both runners found the line and the half head margin and therefore the protest was dismissed and all-clear announced on the judge’s numbers.

TAKE OUT – Pre-race swab. Driver Kellie Munro was issued a reprimand under AHR Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for the manner she shifted ground approaching the 250m which inconvenienced ROCKU momentarily.

ROCKU – ($1.35 fav) Driver Olivia Frisby was queried into the tactics adopted upon the gelding in particular her decision approaching the 1300m when in a favourable one-one position she elected to shift ROCKU to racing three (3) wide from that point onwards. Ms Frisby advised she was instructed to drive ROCKU positively during the event after the start was effected Ms Frisby advised ROCKU did not have sufficient gate speed to match with other runner’s on the front row and was able to obtain a favourable running line position. Ms Frisby advised approaching the 1400m she noticed Angela Hedges driver of THE ROUGUE I AM which was racing outside the leader was looking around and racing back from the leader which she felt Mrs Hedges was seeking to gain cover at which point she directed ROCKU three (3) wide to take up the position racing outside the leader however upon directing ROCKU out Ms Frisby noticed driver Angela Hedges allowed her runner to progress forward which was pulling at that point indicating to her the position would not be available and attempted to direct ROCKU back into the running line however was unable to do so when OLIVEIRA took up the vacated position. Ms Frisby added she elected to remain three (3) wide and not apply any pressure to the leaders in attempt to allow ROCKU to have fully opportunity to finish off the event. Upon consideration of the tactics adopted Stewards advised Ms Frisby that she had erred in her tactics such a distance from the finish of the event in particular the manner THE ROUGUE I AM was racing in pulling during that section & issued Ms Frisby a reprimand for her lack of judgement.

Jibbed during the score up and was significantly out of position when the start was effected. KARINA BOB will now be excluded from the barrier draw in future mobile start events. Driver Madi Young pleaded guilty to a charge under AHR Rule 149(2) which reads: A person shall not drive in a manner which in the opinion of stewards is unacceptable. The particulars of the charge being after KARINA BOB jibbed during the score up and subsequently missed the start by some 50m. Ms Young urged KARINA BOB forward to catch the main body of the field shortly after the start was effected. Shortly after tacking onto the main body of the field Ms Young approaching the 2000m urged KARINA BOB forward three (3) wide and challenge ROCKNRETURN NZ for the lead from the 1900m to approaching the 1609m contributing to the lead time being recorded in 45.5 seconds failing to give KARINA BOB any respite during this section. In the opinion of Stewards the tactics employed by Ms Young during the early stages of the race were the main contributing factor in KARINA BOB commencing to yielded ground rapidly passing the 800m before tiring to finish in 10th & last position beaten 152.4m. In assessing penalty in accordance with the minimum penalty guidelines Stewards took into account the degree of culpability which was assessed to be mid-range, Ms Young’s guilty plea & forthright evidence, her clear prior record under this rule (1300 drives) and the frequency in which she drives in races. Ms Young’s licence to drive in races was suspended for a period of four (4) weeks to commence midnight 6 December 2023.
