Subsequently UBETCHA TIGERPIE was checked and had to shift wider. Unable to secure clear running until approaching the 200 metres. When questioned driver M Stanley explained that he made some use of the gelding at the start to take up a forward position and it was the intention to try and find the lead. However when this was not available, he didn’t want to be caught without cover over the 2300 metres particularly with RIPP leading. He added that he restrained to find the position five back along the marker pegs and he was surprised that CAPTAIN BELLASARIO improved to his outside leaving the 1600 metres. M Stanley said that leaving the 1000 metres he was able to move away from the marker pegs when SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ and JORGE STREET improved three wide. Then he remained three back in the running line until the 400 metres at which point UBETCHA TIGERPIE was hampered, lost ground and had to be shifted wider. At this point BETTER ECLIPSE was able to improve around his runner and he had to wait until BETTER ECLIPSE had passed him before he was able to shift UBETCHA TIGERPIE wider on the track after which time the gelding finished the race off well. M Stanley explained that over the longer distance he prefers to drive UBETCHA TIGERPIE conservatively and in the circumstances, he was pleased with the performance. M Stanely’s explanation was noted.
JORGE STREET – Raced three wide with cover from the 1000 metres.
CAPTAIN BELLASARIO – Inclined to hang in throughout the event and approaching the 400 metres locked wheels with SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ resulting in both runners losing ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. When questioned J Callaghan explained that he improved in the running line leaving the 1700 metres in the hope that he would be able to gain a trail on UBETCHA TIGERPIE. He added that he was surprised when that runner remained racing along the marker pegs. J Callaghan said that the tempo was faster than expected and his runner wanted to hang in. He state that when SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ improved near the 900 metres it was too late to try and restrain his runner to gain cover. J Callaghan added that he was not overly disappointed with the performance of the gelding given he raced without cover and did lose significant ground after locking wheels with SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ. J Callaghan’s explanation was noted.
SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ – Approaching the 1000 metres improved three wide however was unable to cross to the position outside of the leader. Subsequently remained racing three wide without cover over the final 900 metres. Passing the 400 metres engaged sulky wheels with CAPTAIN BALLASARIO when that runner hung in and then had to be corrected wider subsequently SOUTH SEAS ROCK NZ was checked.
