MITTYS THREE ACES NZ – Failed to run on over the concluding stages. J Callaghan explained that near the 900 metres he elected to move away from the marker pegs reluctantly when LOUISE LUCK improved to his outside. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. J Callaghan’s explanation was noted.

LOUISE LUCK – Pre-race blood sample. Post-race swab sample.

Trainer/Driver S Grima explained that although the gelding did break gait at the start, he did not lose significant ground and with this in mind he improved during the middle stages as he expected the tempo of the event to slow sufficiently, however SHORELINE DREAM did not move as quick as anticipated and the tempo remained strong. As a result he was forced to race without cover and was not able to cross to the lead. S Grima added SHORELINE DREAM was inclined to hang in on the last bend. S Grima’s explanation was noted.

WE ALWAYS HAVE FAITH NZ – Placed under pressure approaching the 600 metres and gave significant ground over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery. When questioned, J Gallagher explained he was instructed by Trainer T Williams to attempt to lead. He added after beginning well he was able to drive through underneath OOGA CHAKA and maintain the lead. He added that he wanted to ease the pace approaching the 1200 metres however shortly after, BUSINESS IN HEAVEN improved around the field and came with momentum. He stated that after briefly attempting to resist that challenge, he relinquished the lead to BUSINESS IN HEAVEN. J Gallaher added that leaving the 800 metres WE ALWAYS HAVE FAITH NZ was under pressure and not racing well. After considering J Gallagher’s explanation, reviewing the films and considering the tempo of the first half of the mile in today’s event, Stewards advised Driver J Gallagher that after recording such a fast first quarter, his decision to attempt to hold BUSINESS IN HEAVEN out leaving the 1100 metres lacked the judgement and reminded him of his obligations to ensure he drives all runners within their capabilities. Furthermore he was advised to ensure he always drives with initiative in future.
