A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be significantly lame in the off hind leg. In addition, mild lameness was noticeable in the near hind due to a minor laceration to the cannon bone region. Adopting the veterinary recommendations connections were advised that FLASH KYVALLEY would be stood down from racing until a veterinary certificate of fitness inclusive of a clear x-ray of the off hind fetlock region was received.

CAPTAIN AMELIAH – Pre-race blood samples were obtained. Failed to run on over the concluding stages. Driver J Coney explained that he was instructed to drive the filly conservatively as it was only her second race start and would derive benefit from the run. He added that after settling three back along the marker pegs he attempted to follow VESPA STRIDE in the home straight however his runner was not travelling as well as he expected and failed to run on. He added that connections were confident that CAPTAIN AMELIAH would continue to improve with continued racing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 7 – CONDELL PARK PRODUCE PACE – 1609 metres
HEAVENLY WAGE – Commenced to give ground leaving the 700 metres and tired significantly over the concluding stages to be beaten 91 metres. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. Trainer/driver M Forrest was questioned regarding the tactics employed in the early stages. M Forest explained that since requiring the gelding he had been working well and he was confident that the horse could be competitive in today’s event. He added that it was his intention to try and find a forward position preferably behind the leader. He said that after beginning well without having to drive his horse with any vigour, he was aware of VAN BASTEN and IDEAL MARQUESS had also begun well and he was hopeful that VAN BASTEN would restrain which would allow him the opportunity to surrender the inside position to IDEAL MARQUESS. However, this took longer than he had anticipated. M Forrest stated with the benefit of hindsight the fast first quarter proved to be detrimental and conceded that he may have erred by not surrendering the leading position sooner. He added that notwithstanding this, he was disappointed that his runner was under pressure from the 700 metres. M Forrest’s was advised that in the opinion of Stewards it was open to him to surrender the lead shortly after the 1400 metres which would have afforded his runner a more economical run. M Forrest was advised that he had erred by not being aware of the tempo of the first quarter which was faster than average. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. HEAVENLY WAGE was stood down from racing until it can complete one satisfactory official trial for what was deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance.
RED REACTOR NZ – Underwent a pre and post-race veterinary examination as per HRNSW Animal Welfare guidelines. No abnormalities were detected on either examination.
VAN BASTEN – Leaving the 700 metres was hampered when HEAVENLY WAGE commenced to weaken.
PROMISING – Leaving the 700 metres when racing behind VAN BASTEN was taken back by HEAVENLY WAGE when that runner gave ground.
IDEAL MARQUESS – Caught three wide in the early stages before working forward to the lead near the 1100 metres. Gave ground over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding the tactics employed on IDEAL MARQUESS in particular during the first 800 metres of the event, driver L Rando explained he had been instructed to try and lead and if successful in obtaining the lead only surrender that position if necessary. L Rando said that after beginning well although racing wider on the track he gained an advantage on the two runners to his inside and he was surprised that HEAVENLY WAGE continued to hold the leading position to the inside of VAN BASTEN for a significant distance despite the tempo being faster than average. He added that it was not viable for him to restrain his runner approaching the 1200 metres and therefore continued to work forward until finding the position on the marker pegs. He added that he was aware of the 26.4 first quarter and it was his intention to ease IDEAL MARQUESS during the middle stages. However, leaving the 900 metres DUTY OF CARE improved quickly to his outside and approaching the 800 metres issued a challenge for the lead. L Rando stated that this challenge came too late to surrender the lead additionally he was concerned that DUTY OF CARE had also been used out of the mobile in the early stages. L Rando was advised that his explanation in respect to the first 400 metres of the race was reasonable given his positioning relative to the runners to his inside and the form of those runners. However, L Rando was advised that his decision to maintain the lead when issued with a genuine challenge near the 850 metres was not in the best interests of IDEAL MARQUESS and in the opinion of Stewards he had erred when not allowing the gelding some respite after working so hard in the early stages. Notwithstanding this, Stewards determined not to take any further action however L Rando was advised to drive with judgement and initiative at all times. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.
GO WITHOUT – Pre-race blood samples were obtained. Post-race swab samples were obtained.
