BARKWAY THOMAS – Tired over the concluding stages after working forward three wide from the start until obtaining the position outside the leader near the 1200 metres and beaten by a considerable margin. A post-race Veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Driver G Hoy was questioned regarding the tactics adopted and the performance, he stated that he initially hoped to be able to obtain a forward position with cover but that did not eventuate. He added that he was of the view that OH SO TINNY which had got to the position outside the leader entering the first turn would surrender that position so he continued forward, however as he did so that runner held its position and he had to work harder than he would have preferred to get that position. He further added that while it looked as though he was placing pressure on the leader after getting outside it, his runner was racing keenly and that was not his intention. G Hoy added that he felt the gelding tiring over the concluding stages was a result of the early work and it not settling. Given its performance, connections were advised the gelding would be required to perform a re-qualifying trial.
