Inconvenienced shortly after the start as a consequence of SOVEREIGN PLACE breaking gait.
RACE 2 – PONDEROSA PEST CONTROL PACE – 2125 metres
GREY CADILLAC - Underwent pre and post-race veterinary examinations due to the gelding having started in more than 200 races. These examinations did not reveal any significant findings. Driver Cooper Griffiths was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding and the overall performance of GREY CADILLAC which finished in 10th placing beaten 29 metres ($4.00). Mr Griffiths explained he attempted to lead during the early stages however GREY CADILLAC did not possess sufficient speed to be able to secure the lead. Mr Griffiths added that approaching the 1600 metres an opportunity presented for him to direct GREY CADILLAC away from the marker pegs and accordingly he did so and was able to obtain the position without making any significant use of GREY CADILLAC. Mr Griffiths added therefore he drove the gelding in its usual manner and attempted to race on equal terms with the leader JETASI NZ as previously GREY CADILLAC has performed best when able to do so. Mr Griffiths added the speed of the event was suited the prior racing pattern of GREY CADDILAC with the race run in even sectionals (29.5, 29.8, 29.8, 29.8) however, GREY CADILLAC was unable to race head to head with JETASI NZ and in his view this contributed to in his opinion the somewhat disappointing performance of GREY CADILLAC. A post-race veterinary examination of GREY CADILLAC failed to reveal any significant findings. In view of the evidence provided by Mr Griffiths, combined with the prior racing pattern of GREY CADILLAC, Stewards took the matter no further with respect to the tactics adopted.
SMOKESCREEN – Driver Joshua Gallagher was questioned the tactics adopted on the gelding in particular his decision to steady SMOKESCREEN approaching the 1600 metres which resulted in GREY CADILLAC being able to improve away from the marker pegs. Mr Gallagher explained that when JETASI NZ, who he had been following, progressed forward to obtain the lead it resulted in SMOKESCREEN being positioned without cover which he felt was not a unfavourable position for the gelding. Mr Gallagher added he was aware GREY CADILLAC was positioned to his inside and mindful of his extended record of having performed well when positioned outside the leader he felt it would be a favourable runner to follow and that as JETASI NZ had only just secured it was increasingly unlikely that it would surrender the lead. Mr Gallagher added GREY CADILLAC improved forward however was unsuccessful in gaining the lead and he therefore gained a favourable horse to follow for the remainder of the race. Upon consideration of the tactics adopted by Mr Gallagher, and mindful of the extended form of both GREY CADILLAC and SMOKESCREEN, combined with SMOKESCREEN finishing in 1st placing Stewards could not be satisfied in the circumstances that the tactics adopted by Mr Gallagher were unreasonable or unacceptable in these circumstances and recorded his explanation. Post-race swab sample.
